I have to have a say here. You people are getting to be so modernistic.

When i listen to Southern Gospel, even by myself, I can have church.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess, but I really wonder about some of you.

Response: I think alot of it has to do with the whole slap stick comedic routine and performance which has become so canned associated with "southern gospel".

Now you have really heated this up. If you are that quality of musician, you should know to never trash a genre'. YOu may say you are not fond of it, don't understand it, are not into it, but you may not say it doesn't qualify as a ligitamate art form. Country has it's roots in the deep south and west (as in Texas). It is the music of much of the culture of our land. Southern gospel is a derivitive of that sound. The old singing schools of the 20-40 era gave birth to that distinctive sound. I have performed both..........and I have sung arias in college productions and hs. My scholarships were all musical scholarships( 18 in all).

But, I can say you are the first person I have talked to who performed at the hall at age 2. It took me a while longer than that.

Again , I am messing with you. I am certain that your lack of love for the genre's mentioned is a little tongue in cheek.

I didn't perform there at age 2, that is just when i started my interest in music! I was 16. maybe I was a little hasty in what I said about hardly calling it art, but I still stand by the fact that it is extremely repetitious. I still say that it is boring, but I'm only 24 and don't know much about the world, so maybe my opinion isn't worth much to the older generation!

I'm just pickin' too!

Dr. Ron, I'm going to back Wendy up on this one (a little bit). Southern gospel was fine in its day but modern music is more syncopated, interesting and "happier" sounding.

Pastorables, ImaPK, and Doris, I've heard them and purt near every Southern Gospel group there is (not by my choice, but my dad loves it, so I've been more than exposed to it)

Having heard most Southern Gospel groups, I stand by my analysis that it is boring. It's not that they don't put on a show. They do. It's just that that type of music does nothing for me. I'm glad it does for ya'll.

I also think that Scooter's comment abouth the slapstick routines that some groups put on has some validity. I've been to see a couple of groups multiple times and they use the very same "spontaneous" line, verbatim, over and over. It just seems ungenuine and an "act". I guess it just turns me off. And the act seems to extend to the singing to. It doesn't seem like worship, just a show.

I know it gives many people a blessing, so God bless the Southern Gospel boys, and may they keep on singing (outside my earshot).

I am not a spokesperson or huge fan of Southern Gospel. I like all styles of music, but not all categories of music. I am a "mood" person when it comes to music. I can listen to Mozart and I can listen to the Beach Boys, but anything in the Christian category would be top priority, whether the style of Southern Gospel, Country, Pop, or Rap, etc...

I have always liked all types of music. I was one of few in High School who could jam to Hank, Jr., Z.Z. Top, or Run DMC all in the same session.

I like Southern Gospel at times (certain groups), Country Gospel even better, but mostly I listen to Contemporary Christian music, etc... If I desire to really worship God, I get out the P & W.

I consider myself somewhat of a music critic. When I graduated, I owned cassettes (no Cd's back then) of just about every popular artist in several categories, about 400 in all. I have always been a huge music guru.

I don't limit music I like to styles or headings they fall under. I try to judge each on it's own merits.

The only thing I can't hardly listen to anymore is music that doesn't praise my Lord. It's dead bones talking, dry parched, lacking spirit or food.

I enjoy the lyrics that take me somewhere and allow me to see something that I haven't seen. Praise my Lord in a fashion I have yet to do.

If you shut out entire different styles of music and prejudge in advance you might be missing something really fantastic...

Now I can accept what you are saying. I began in southern gospel and country gospel. I was the first guitar player for the Imperials (can you say cutting edge) and my own groups later, introduced a lot of contemporary music. My son is an award winning writer of southern gospel, contemporary gospel, country, pop, and light rock.

I don't do country gospel nor southern gospel much anymore. My church does mostly contemporary. That is our target area. That is the music that reaches the folks in our area. Play to your audience. We don't try to please the musicians.........we use music to minister to the unchurched......not to make christians happy they came (well we hope they like it).

Anyway, I accept that some genres are boring. However, if you don't like repetition how in God's name can you stand some of the praise and worship stuff that is out there now. i.e. "I am a friend of God". Wow talk about repetition.

Anyway, you sound like you have some chops. Drop by some time and we'll jam.......

Ritchie, you know I know enough about southern gospel to know I don't like it no matter who the group is. I've heard the Crabb's and every other southern gospel group out there and I do not like them.

I agree that some praise and worship music is repetitious, and those aren't my favorite songs.

I was ministered to once during a service in which we had guest country gospel singers. I didn't care for the style of music but the words that day were just for me.

Can I trash Mexican Country music? That Polka soundin' stuff you hear in the restaurants is pretty retched. I'm a little late comin' into this thread but I pretty much like everything. Southern Gospel is what I grew up listening to. My momma could wear out a cassette tape of some good ole Southern Gospel so it brings back fond memories. I like it. But I like all kinds of stuff. Rap, classical, really bad boy band pop, I'd like the Dixie Chicks if they would stop sharing their opinion, rock, praise and worship,...you name it. Just leave out the Mexican Polka Country stuff and it'd be a perfect music world.

I ate at a local Chinese Buffet that played the best of Cristy Lane. Remember...One Day at a Time Cristy Lane? Then at the same restaurant...different visit...they played I Can Only Imagine....on repeat. I counted and we heard it like 9 times.
