the bars where all up in arms about our new law, expressing their concern over potential loss of business. I read that after the first year, profits overall were up over 35%.

Yeah, I can see where there might be a natural connection between booze and smokes, but the over-riding issue here was the issue of bar workers and second-hand smoke. PLUS -- our main block of tourists are Japanese who smoke like chimneys. The airport here is largely open-air, and is now a totally smoke-free zone... used to be a lot of nicoteine deprived travelers puffing away all over the outdoor areas. Not sure how it has impacted tourism figures.

Doesn't that disqualify most of the south?

Hey, I'll have you know that not all of the south is as portrayed in movies like "Sweet Home, Alabama!" I suggest you see 'Constellation" when it comes out. I can't speak for other parts of the south but Huntsville is a very progressive city.

Smoking is prohibited in all public buildings and the restaurants must post a sign stating if they are a smoking establishment. No one under 19 is permitted in a place with a sign allowing smoking. I only know of one that is a smoking restaurant and it's more a bar than a restaurant.

I have suggested they have the GA in Huntsville Alabama. I've even introduced one of the people from HQ to the appropriate personnel at the convention center! I sort of doubt they will have it here although I pointed out to them the practicality of not having to transport all those books and other stuff so far away from the "holy city." Several new hotels have been constructed this past year and several more will be opening this year. You can find mom and pop restaurants as well as the big chains with prices from very inexpensive to the very exclusive. There's a new Ruth's Chris that's just opened in the new Embassy Suite Hotel and a variety of restaurants within walking distance of the Von Braun Center. I could even introduce you to some of the "local" flavor if that's what you're interested in. There's fried catfish, barbecue, and of course the mainstay of all southern homes, pinto beans, collards, fried green tomatoes and cornbread. "Martha's kitchen" might even be open from time to time.

AHEM... (stepping onto soapbox now)...

There is ZERO need to transport a ton of books and set up a huge bookstore at the Assembly. At the local Christian equipping conference in Hawaii a local Christian bookstore sets it all up and gives the organization a cut. They also have a huge book discounter who flies in tons of bargain books and gives them a cut. All they would need to move is the COGOP-specific stuff.

I didn't know that book stores would do that but it sounds great. Have you presented this to the "powers" at GH? I'm very sure that those who have to move all that stuff would support this idea. :applaud:

^^actually, I am very sure that it has already been brought to the attention of the powers that be in HQ (probably on more than one occasion). :)

Outlaw smoking in public buildings, yes, that can be easily & successfully inforced. But if you outlaw tobacco, it'll just wind up like pot and alcohol; they'll grow it in South America, smuggle it into the US, organized crime will make a fortune off it, and eventually, the ban will be repealed.
Actually, I think in this instance the government is going about it right; tax the snot out of the folks who buy it, penalized the companies who produce it, and eventually make it too expensive to take up and too costly to generate a profit. In this modern age, where no one but ignorant savages out in the sticks grow stuff for their own consumption, it will drop out of existance.

Why is it that bad decisions seem to make to most interesting testimonies?

I absolutely can't stand it. But I still voted to No. We can't abandon all personal freedoms! The next anti-law will be aimed at something I like.

I do think we should ban in public places and establishments that serve the public etc. Because people have lost respect for others. It's all about me today and no consideration for your neighbor.

If smokers were less selfish it wouldn't be a problem.. so basically they have brought this upon themselves imho.
