Exactly, Brother Sam. I wasn't talking/asking about a personal issue/level. this was about representation of a given state make official apology.
Dr. Ron wrote:...An official apology was included in the emancipation proclaimation many years ago. The very fact that Abe Lincoln did what he did was an apology....
and I agree with you Dr. Ron, on this topic. I believe that official governmental/representative "apology" has been made.

However, I also agree with pastorsam, in that if a local state condoned slavery, that it wouldn't be a bad idea for them to make apology in some official capacity, if they haven't already. I do not think that all states should do this, however.

I'd say "YES" we should, and I have tried as much as possible to do my part.
I do not see that as the same thing.

obviously the issues are different, The challenge I have is that the people involved in slavery are long gone, while those hurt by our church are not. I would apologize, if I thought it would mean something, when communicating with those that have been given the left boot of dis-fellowship. I joined the COGOP after all that had already taken place, though.

timing is everything.

Wouldn't all the free rides given to so many undeserving people be an apology to some respect. I realize there are lots of people that need the help they receive every month, but where I live so many are receiving and still are working and making as much as middle class citizens. These people live and have more than so many people that have worked and payed taxes all of their live,we have at least 3 generation that have never worked and have never paid into the system, some even bitterly complain when they have to pay$ 2.00 to see the doctor or pay taxes on anything they buy, I worked in a grocery store and a medical clinic so I have seen first hand how so many of them abuse the system. We could apologize until the cows come home and some would never be satisfied. If the Christians of the world are the church are not the citizens of the state the state.

I have some very good black friends and have no quarrel with any of them that I know of,enough is enough,I still say an apology from me or other citizens(THE STATE)will not change history, all we can do is look to the future and hope and pray that past wrongs will not be repeated.

should states apologize for slavery?

Postby Dr. Ron » March 29th, 2007, 5:15 am

Once again I find myself in a defensive posture on j2.

I will state this again in reference to those who think I look for opportunities to bash COGOP. I did not bash it/yall/them///whatever.

I spent most of my life in the organization. I have earned the right to say whatever I please about it......good or bad.....and likely know more about it and it's history than any of you. It is my only point of reference. I was only trying to make a point of the pointlessness of trying to "apologize" for things that are so far in the past, it makes no difference to do so.

I made no mention of the most recent GA. I was there for decades when people were dis-fellowshiped for cutting their hair, going to ball games, chewing gum, going to the county fair, and on and on and on. My question was a valid one. Would going back and apologizing to the entire group of hurt people make a difference in the grand scheme of things. Pastor Gary is very eloquent in his spiritualizing of the issue.......but was called to task by Imapk as being a "politically correct" stance....and rightly so. If my reasons for apologizing for something is to get it off my back and put the onus on the offended, then it smacks more of selfish motive than a true contrite spirit for the offense.

I have not said too much about COGOP in a long time. Henceforth I will try to forget that I was ever there and not offend any of you again. Since it seems that I am being offensive whenever I mention it at all.

However, I will not apologize for my statements. I do believe it was a valid comparison.

PastorSam, STATES are made up of PEOPLE, of which I am one. If the majority of the STATE(PEOPLE) say that an apology is needed then go for the "political correct" route and say "WE ARE SORRY". BUT, if the majority says "NO" then drop it and get over it. A poll was taken in the four major cities of TN in the newspapers and the MAJORITY in all four papers said NO to an apology. This included the city of Memphis which is roughly 80% BLACK and the largest city in the state. And Tennessee WAS a slave State.

IMAPK- those same states voted to legalize slavery. Just because the majority wants (or doesn't want) to do something doesn't make it the right thing to do.

 I agree- to a point- I don't think it's a question of right or wrong but a question of "political correctness" and in today's world the "politically correct" thing to do is always "right" no matter how wrong or stupid it might be.

This was a very valid comparison, and good question, although I do think they are different issues.

The states that supported slavery could apologize if they have not already, although I think it would only serve to keep the issue out there and wounds open. As a society we have moved past this, except for a few like the KKK, and those who feel they have been so personally wronged that they deserve an apology (or more).

As for the COGOP, these are fresh issues, and do need to be dealt with. in Many areas they are, but it's not an easy thing.
