I would probably submit.

It just makes me mad to think that I have stayed single all these years. If the Lord didn't really care that I left an abusive man and I had the right to remarry I might have been a better person and looked in the right places, instead of all the places I was in. I'm now over the hill.

A life of possibilities all thrown away and denied because of a few men's interpretation of scripture.

She has every right to feel mad... I would too. Gee, you only get one life... you live most it doing what you were told was right only to find out they're pondering changing their minds!?!

Reminds me why my grandparents quit going to church back when my dad was a boy. Preacher up in the pulpit slobbering everywhere about the evils of TV and how you shouldn't have one. Guess what? It was finally found out that a member did indeed own a TV. Guess who had one? the preacher!! :shock:

People are getting tired of this abuse! Amen?

I've been a mamber of COGOP since I was 10 - 34 years, now. Saved and joined in Martinsville, VA under Bro. Posey Wright. Kept my membership there while in college at Blacksburg, VA and while living in Huntsville, AL. Lived in Asheville, NC for 15 years (Bro. Kieth Russell, Bro. Phil Willingham, Bro. Kenneth Dees) and now I'm in living in Ridgeway, VA but attending at Eden, NC (Bro. Russell, again).

A lot of my extended family on my father's side are originally from the Poplar Camp, VA area and strongly COGOP for decades.

That being said, most of the people I know (other than online) don't want to see a change in the D&R teaching, neither in our stand on "double marriage," simply because they usually see any change from the old ways as being "compromising the standards" (we COULDN'T have been mistaken). Personally, I think we are right to treach against D&R, but missed the mark on "except for fornication" defined as double marriage, so I would like to see the membership requirements changed, not requiring the second marriage to be disolved.

Doris, you made my heart hurt with this post. I have actually thought about your position though because I have a friend who is about your age that was in a similar situation and has remained single all these years. She is a good, loving, Christian person with such wonderful qualities to share. My heart hurts for her also. She never had anyone to take care of her and do all those things that husbands should do. She raised her kids pretty much by herself (with the help of immediate family). I wonder what her life would have been like if she could have felt that she had the freedom to marry again.

Thanks, Kenya, but you know what? I'm real happy now. I take care of my mother and that's a pain sometimes, but I know she is on her way to heaven so it's ok.

I have my children, Ondra and Tim; my grandchildren, Micah and Gracee and they fill my life.

I go on the principle, God First, Family Second, Career Third. You know about that one.

Based on the people I know, pastors and laity, I believe the percentage for and against a change concerning D&R is about equal. The state in which I pastor (SC) is probably one of the more conservative states. I have pastor friends who are in favor of this change but would never let their congregations know it for fear of reprisal from within the local church. We, at our local church, have received members in by covenant who have had a previous marriage. The decision to do this was based on our understanding of the scriptures. Some of these members came from other denominations and have proved to be a great blessing. Some churches have received D&R members in and restricted them from voting in business meetings, etc. Other churches have two membership roles. Their are others who will not accept them in until it is passed in the General Assembly and yet others who never will accept them. My desire is to please the Lord above all things!

I am for taking them in.
Having my name on the church books or not is not going to guarantee me to Heaven, its never been preached that.
I guess a lot feel better with in them selves if their members, feel more like they belong there. A part of something. I don't blame them, after all if they work there, use their time, energy and are good stewards of their money there, and are being faithfull.

But the preached truth can't be altered.. and what is truth? Who has the divine revelation? I know we hope we are walking in the light.. we're hoping, trusting and praying God is leading our leadership. If God is in it.. if God is leading the ship it will go to the other side.. But if we're in our selves and wanting to look the other way and appease our selves.. it will go under.

We need God!! We need to hear from Heaven. We need to understand when the move of God takes place in talking to us, that it is him. We have to many doubters, to many criticizers, because it doesn't go the way they want, say its not of God. We need to ask God to put it in or take it out.. if its not of him. Move among us here today, Lord.
Even if it takes place as with Ananias and sapphira.. maybe what we need is a little more fear of God.
I'm not talking about us on here, per se' but to the whole General Assembly.
This is serious business. Not a game to be played with name titles. This is soul business.

Oh well, I guess, I said enough as it is. So I'll hush up.

Well...here in Arkansas, I feel that across the board the vote would have to be 60 percent against. But personally I lean toward a lower figure.
And yes, for those thinking it...I am a fish out of water!!!

I'm not scared of change. But I do agree that we need some well-defined criteria on marriage or get us all on the same page. so to speak.

If you're wondering how I did this, I gave each vote an equal "weight" of 2.439% then calculated each vote proportionally depending on the percentages of each poll answer.

I will say this is probably the most unscientific poll I've ever seen. :wink:

Absolutely. It is a tiny section of a sub-group of a miniscule population expressing a view. That is all is was intended to be. On another forum a poster maintains that 90% of COGOP is against changing and that just sounded so very far from what I know of the views of the people I know, I thought I'd ask if my experience was that far different from yours.

Apparently not.
