College football Conference predictions... (honest view)

Postby TC » August 18th, 2007, 9:04 am

My (Honest) Conference Champion Predictions

We are 12 days from playing football this season, so I thought I would pick my conference winners from each BCS conference and see how I do at the end of the season:

PAC-10 Winner=USC-The best overall talented team in the country. Their biggest threat is their game vs. Cal.

SEC Winner=LSU-I don't think they will go undefeated, but I do think they are the most talented team. I think they could lose 2 games and still win the SEC West, but LSU is far more talented than any team in the SEC East. The team to watch is Bama, see how the new coach takes over

ACC Winner= Virginia Tech-I feel like this conference is wide open, but Va Tech has the most solid QB in the conference and an always strong defense. Plus they will get tested early vs. LSU I see the ACC as the weakest conference and this year many of the counrty will see it...EVEN IF the talking heads will just say... "just look at how much parity is in the conference"

Big 10(11) Winner=Wisconsin-They are the most complete team the Big 10 has this season. They also were the best Big 10 team in January as well. Their only real question is @ QB, but the system is more predicated on the run and the QB is OK. Michigan's defense is terrible, and Ohio State just loses too much. (Sorry DB)

Big 12 Winner=Oklahoma-The Big XII title will stay in the South this season. Oklahoma actualy put together a great season last year considering they had to scramble to find a starting QB a month before training camp. I look for more solid play from the Sooners. My only real question mark is Nebraska. Texas is too fragile w/ Colt McCoy under center.

Big East Winner=LOUISVILLE....Well this is a real toss up for me... BUT I have to pick Louisville. (real shocker) I don't feel comfortable with our November schedule. WVU, USF, then Rutgers is a lot to ask 3 games in a row. Last year we followed our WVU win with a loss to Rutgers. Plus we play 2 of 3 in November on the road. If we pull out the win in Morgantown we may be able to win a tie-breaker, but WVU's schedule sets up for success and if they are healthy very difficult to beat. That said, "Go Cards!!!!" The best part is Rutgers and WVU play earlier so one will have a loss, Yet The Cards have a shot at undefeated until those last three. In all reality I say it is a toss up... SO I go with the Cards. BUT I do see both the Ville and EERS playing in a BSC bowl games.

Oh yeah and Notre Dame will go 6-6 (at BEST)

TC - I know you were waiting on me to post on this, I've thought long and hard so here goes.

Unlike you TC, I'm going to start with the BCS spoiler conferences.

Sun Belt Troy, simply because there is no one else in that conference that can compete with them.

Mid American From the East, Big 12 cast off Frank Solich has turn the Ohio Bobcats around, this maybe his ticket back to a bigger name school. From the West, Central Michigan. As a matter of fact, Central Michigan if they can get past Western Michigan they could be this year's Boise St. team.

Conference USA In the East, this will be a tough match between S. Miss and Central Flordia. but in the end I think it will be Southern Miss advancing to the championship game. From the West, despite the loss of their all conference QB last year, Kolb, Houston is still the team to beat. With Houston winning back to back conference titles in C-USA for the first time since the "little redbirds" did it in '00-'01.

Western Athletic Last year Boise was everyone's feel good story. The blue turf and all. Well this year the Bronco's have to travel to the wonderful island to face Colt Brennan. Colt has a great shot at the Heisman, and (hear this Pastor Gary) Hawaii wins the WAC.

Mountain West This should be a fun conference to keep up with this year as again TCU will be gunning for the big boys and try to get into the BCS. BYU will be good but when all the dust or should I say snow settles in the Mountain West, TCU will win this conference.

Now on to the Big Boy's.

Pac 10 You have USC, Cal and everybody else. If USC can get by Cal, they will be in New Orleans for the National Championship game. Who will they play that has yet to be determined.

SEC Without question this is the strongest conference in the country, as a matter of fact they are head and shoulders above everyone else. Put the winner of any other conference and let them play in the SEC and you will see no conference champ would be able to compete week in and week out in this conference. Having said that LSU has the most talent of any team in the west. But Les Myles has a way of messing it up. Having said that, I still think LSU wins the West, but I would keep an eye out for a West Virginia guy in Tuscalosa. As for the East it is wide open with at least 3 teams able to win it. Florida, UT, UGA. Don't forget the Wildcats, I think they will be better than folks think. But at the end of the day it will be LSU and Florida rematching in Atlanta for the SEC championship. LSU will get the better of them in Baton Rouge, but in the rematch I like Urban, so I'm picking Florida to win the SEC, simply because Les Myles has a way of blowing games he should win.

ACC A few years ago there was talk that the Big East did not deserve a BCS Bid, my question is why are we now not hearing that same talk about the ACC? Talk about a weak conference. Plus had it not been for the ACC raping the former Big East this conference wouldn't have a leg to stand on. Having said that, from the Atlantic Division which is terrible winning by default will be the Clemson Tigers, simply because no one else in that division can win it. Boston College will be their strongest competion. From the Coastal Division will be Va. Tech, no doubt the best team in that conference. What I would love to see is BC win the Atlantic and Va Tech win the Coastal so we could have a former Big East winner in the weak ACC. You know whatever happened to FSU/Miami meeting in the Championship Game of this conference? Maybe Coach K was right that the ACC sold it's soul when it expanded for football.

Big Ten To the conference that can't count. There are basically two teams competing for the title this year. Sorry Dalebert, but the Buckeyes are not one of them. It will all come down to Camp Randall Stadium on Nov. 10 when Michigan comes to town. While I really like Wisconsin, I think this game is the reason, Hart, Henne, and Long came back to win a Big Ten Title and Michigan will win the title in Carr's last season at Ann Arbor, and Michigan will hire Les Myles while LSU helps him pack the moving van.

Big 12 In the North it will be tough, but in the end I think Nebraska is on it's way back. They will have to get by the Missouri Tigers in Columbia but I think they get it done. In the South, while OK has a tremendous defense, their questions at QB concern me. I'm picking the Longhorns to pull this out and beat Nebraska in the Championship Game.

Big East This is probably the most competive this league has been since it was raped a few years back by the ACC, which has shut the mouths of those who kept saying they should lose their BCS bid. This was the only conference that went undefeated in the bowl games last year. Their are 4 teams that could win this conference, but I think WVU will go to Tampa and get it done against the bulls. I don't think the "little redbirds" are as good as everybody thinks they are. As a matter of fact in the November 8th meeting it will not surprise me to see the red birds with some ruffled feathers when they make the trip to Morgantown. I also believe there will not be a used couch found in Morgantown on November the 9th! Rutgers is the team that could be very dangerous with Rice back and a good defense. However, when everything is said and done. WVU will win this conference behind Slaton and White and a much improved defense.

And for the team that everyone loves to hate Notre Dame, TC you were kind after their first 8 games they could be 1-7 so I predict a losing season in South Bend at 5-7.

Now let the games begin so we will see how big of an expert I am not!

While I somewhat agree, I really think that Louisville is somewhat over rated just because the new Coach thing is such an unknown.. Louisville did lose a few good players but almost to a man the replacements are better. The only one you can question would be Bush and he only play one half of a game and The ville was 3 points from the national title.

I don't see WVU as being that much more improved, I guess if you have trained S & W to hold on the ball that would be a great improvement. What gets me is Brohm is questioned because he has been injured in a few games. YET Slaton has blamed his fumbles on being hurt.. So why is is health not in question.

I think it is really a toss up... Louisville as a killer END to the season.. the three best conf team all in a row at the end of the season.. BUT the good point is when that time comes at BEST they could only face 1 undefeated team. SO that is why I say it goes to the cards. WVU is first so that will be the test.. just can't have a let down after that game. I think the people will be most supprised by The Villes D, with the Juco transferes, the Kid from Miami as well as Woodney and Whitehead they are really fast. Mario is healthy. Most people did not know he was playing with stress fractures all of last season.

I am a UT fan but This year I see UofL being the better shot to the title. IF that happens there will be no doubt that this team is legit.. In the past 10 years they went from 1-10 to 12-1... I can tell you a ton of other facts when I get the time... but I know Facts never bother eers, as long as they got a match they are happy

I feel the "little red birds" are well over-rated. First starting with the coach and a new system. Second you lost several good players on the d-side of the ball. Now your becoming known as "THUG U" of the north taking all the thugs from Miami.

WVU did not have a good backup to Slaton last year. This year we have the #1/2 (depends on which recruiting source you listen to) High School recruit in Noel Devine along with another freshman named Sanders that can well spell Slaton. Our backup QB Brown lead us to a victory over Rutgers last year in the place of White. As a running back when your wrist is broke it's hard to hold on to anything let alone a football. That's why Brohm missed a few games last year because his thumb was broke and he couldn't hold the ball. Slaton got injuried in the UL game and was not the same the rest of the season. He has had that wrist surgical repaired and should be ready to go. That's not to say he will not get hurt again this year. Time will tell. However, Brohm has gone down each of the last two seasons with injuries and has missed some games. Brohm with a knee, a thumb. As with any player they are only one play away from injury and missing games. It would be great if no players could/would get hurt but you and I both know that injuries are a part of the game and do cost some teams.

I don't see it as a toss-up at all. I think USF will beat UL in Tampa just like they did two years ago. I think UK will beat UL this year, and to prove that last year was not a fluke I think Rutgers will beat UL at home again. I think WVU is the team to beat in the conference this year.

With that thought in mind I will say this that if a LSU goes through the SEC with one loss and USC goes undefeated as I think they will. Then a one loss LSU should get the BCS Championship Game bid over a undefeated WVU or an undefeated UL team. That's my $.02

Pac 10 -- USC, hands down. They win it all, IMO.

Big 12 -- Nebraska is back. Mark it.

Big East -- RichRod earns his new big paycheck and WVU takes it all. I'm tired of picking Louisville -- they always manage to lose when they shouldn't.

ACC -- Steeped in mediocrity this year, but I like VT to win it.

Big 10 -- Boy I wish I could pick Penn State (HA!) b/c I like Joe Pa. But, I think Michigan goes Rose this time. The little worry wart in me wonders if Michigan will come after Nick Saban, and if so, would he go?

SEC -- Man, oh, man I am having trouble buying into the LSU hype this time around. But, who else is there in the West to give them a run for their money? Auburn, that's who. And, I think the SEC West goes to Auburn this year. In the East, I am not convinced that UT has really turned it around. I am dubious that Urban Meyer can rebuild Florida so easily with as many key players as he lost to the pros. I'm hedging that Florida repeats in the East, and my 1st runner up over there is South Carolina. I think LSU and Auburn will give Florida all they can handle in the regular season, and UF better hope they win at least one of those games because UGA and SC will be ready for 'em. I pick LSU to win the conference, but win ugly.

Notice I didn't mention 'Bama? Good reason --- we go 7-5 at best this year. Ohhhh, but wait until 2009 ladies. By 2010, we'll have over 100K seats in Bryant-Denny and we'll be knocking on the door of a national championship again. I hope. But this year?? W's and L's are not nearly as important in my mind as how the game is managed. That's what I'm going to watch --- how quickly we break huddles, how certain we are on assignments, is clock management done well, substitutions, are we making dumb decisions on kickoff returns (that's going to be mitigated some by the ball being moved back to the 30 this year for kickoffs -- fewer touchbacks everywhere). If we can get basic game management in the right direction, I can swallow defeats from our big rivals again for another year.

ROB ROB ROB.... WAKE UP.... THUG U... from a eer fan... have they had a team without legal issues? What is all the thugs from Miami... there IS ONE transfer from Miami so I am not sure where the ALL comes from...

The ones Louisville lost on D were good but the ones replacing them are just as good. I think you been reading the blue papers too much. The ONLY O player that we lost that was big was Bush, And we lost him last year so Louisville is deep in rec and backs. THe O and D lines are both bigger and faster than they have ever been (I know that is what the kittens say every year but you can see it on the scale and watch) Louisville has got the #1Juco, form last year as well as several 4stars. When speaking of back up Qb's Louisvilles is considered one of the best in the country and many feel he could start most places.

Brohm went down with the Knee and it was surgically repaired and never had a problem with it last year. He hurt his thumb (did not break it messed with tendons and stuff) He continued to play that game and was ready to go the others. Petrino sat him out to get it repaired and have him ready for later in the season. He missed two games came back and never had any other problems. At first they were not going to worry about it until the end of the season but with the bulk of the season coming late and Cantwell had no problems with the games so they decided to get it over with quick. they said he could be out up to 6 weeks and I think he missed only two games.

If you want to go back and read the press clippings WVu was LOADED last year but two guy had to carry the team. Yes you some good recruits. but I think they they will depend to the two and unless they can get more players to pick it up then they will struggle.

I'm tired of picking Louisville -- they always manage to lose when they shouldn't.

DOLFAN... what are you talking about, they lost one game last year by 3 in a last second FG, were 9-3 the year before One dumb loss at USF, by 3 in triple ot, and in the bowl game with a back up QB, the year before lost ONE GAME.. AT miami by 3... If our Dback had not dropped and INT we would have one that one... So over the last 3 years Only last ONE game that they should have won.

Rob, I think the ONLY person we lost that will be really tough to replace is Amobi Okoye. Sharp,Smart and Quaterman are big losses but I think we have really filled those spots well, we just need to get them more snaps. I know Kolby Smith is a loss, he was a good all purpose runner but I don't see our new Backs being that big of a step down.

Let me tell you about our new guys…

Doug Beaumont a WR/Db from Louisville, Picked the ville over Michigan, ND, SC and UT

Dale Martin a Tail back that picked the Ville over Fla, Nebraska UT, Iowa and Wisconson

Victor Anderson Picked the Ville over UT and WVU

Woodney Turenne, CB from JC considered the #1 Juco. Picked the ville over FLA the CJ reported he timed out at 10.3 seconds in the 100-yard dash, I don't know how recently he ran that time, but that would've been good for sixth place in the NCAA 100-meter dash finals this spring. FAST!!!!!

Willie Williams.. YES he had problems before he went to Miami and I thought that he has not had any legal trouble since. But I did hear he had problems with the UM staff. He was one of the top recruits in the country. Several stories had him going to WVU and UT … YES I know that some say WVU turned him down, others say they talked and both realized it was not a good match… MAYBE he wanted to leave his legal problems in the past and did not want to get in with that bad crowd at Morgantown… for any eer fan to bring up thugs when two of their player were arrested... not good timing
HEY I am all for giving a kid a chance but at the same time, there comes a time you have to cut them loose. Some people make bad mistakes. BUT I can bet you this… IF he was to get into any legal problems here then You bet he won’t be seeing playing time.

Those are just some of the 4 stars Most are in the top 40 or better. We did get a few good player that will need to redshirt. We also got one guy that was one of the top linemen two years ago that picked Michigan over the Ville and a few others. Well he transfered in this week and there is one MSU guy that is from Paris Ky that looked at the Ville and the kittens word is that he will walk on the ville sometime next week.

Tony,

West Virginia has had players that have gotten into trouble, even to start this year they have two that have been suspended. However, not one of the kids has been a transfer!!! We have recruited our problems, not taken on someone elses.

Tony I don't get my info from the Lexington Hearld. (FYI). I have read some things on line. I do know that your right guard when down and is out for the year. Your O-line is going to be suspect this year from what I've been reading.

Your defense is suppose to be good, but no one is expecting it to be equal to last year.

WVU was loaded last year on Offense, everyone knew they would have to outscore folks to win. We lost so much from the previous year on d that was in the top 15 in total defense.

We were not deep on Offense either as was shown from the red bird game. When Slaton went down our running game was no existent. However, that should not be the case this year. Brown shown last year in the Rutgers game that he is more than capable back up, while he can't run like White he is a much more affective passer.

[quote]Willie Williams.. MAYBE he wanted to leave his legal problems in the past and did not want to get in with that bad crowd at Morgantown… for any eer fan to bring up thugs when two of their player were arrested... not good timing

UL is becoming THUG U NORTH If Williams wanted to come to WVU Rich Rod would probably not take him because of his previous problems. As I stated earlier, at least Rich Rod has recruited his own problems. I will bet you this, there has been kids in the past that have gotten into trouble at UL and ended up playing there. Just like at UK, WVU or any other school in the USA.

As for recruiting Pitt has the best class this year in the Big East followed by WVU both where in the top 25 for '07. Having said that, there was a kid WVU recruited 3 years ago that was the best back in the state of OH and was suppose to be the next Archie Griffin and he turned down OSU, MI, PSU and other to come to WVU, and to back him up WVU recruited a kid out of PA that really the only other school that wanted him was Maryland. I can't even tell you that kids name, but his back-up was Slaton. My point is this, on PAPER a lot of kids are 4/5 star High School All-American's. But as my baseball coach said, anyone can talk a good game it's played between the white lines.

So having said all that, I can't wait till next Thursday night.

I AM READY FOR SOME COLLEGE FOOTBALL!!!!!

OH I see THe Ville takes in problem kids and makes them players... WVU takes in players and MAKES them thugs... BTW... I am all for giving a kid a second chance. Some times kids and programs dont fit.

You need to watch which boards you are getting your info from... (BTW the LHL would be better than Cj..) Yes he had RG that is out for the season but he was filling in a spot from a sr and that is not a problem. YES on the O.. the line is the real question mark. We lost a few good players but the Backs and Rec are just as good or better. (all are healthy as of now) Yes the D has some spots that will be hard to replace Like Amobi Okoye, but if you recall the same was said about him when he replaced Elvis. we lost the most from the secondary but those coming in have better raw talent but have not had much PT.

SO one player is making UofL Thug U... name somemore... I would be willing to say it you asked all of college football who would be thug U... UofL would not be in the top 20, but WVU would be in the top five. Your thug comment must be coming from those who are wearing blue or burning couches... OH I SEE... since IF Rod had got him FIRST that would be ok...again.. I guess WVU would rather be known for how bad they are AFTER they leave.

Yes each school has kids that get into problems.. but they deal with them differently...The Kittens have a Zero Tollerance but that is only after the 4th or 5th time in court. Yes the Cards will give Kids a shot that make a mistake (like others) ..BUT what I was saying is the Wille will not get a long leash, Just like when UofL got Montrel Jones from UT, he was busted at UT for pot, and was a problem in the locker room and on the field for not supporting his fellow players. When he wanted to come to the Ville. His grandmother (a "Civil rights" touble maker) said a few things before he walked in the door. I WAS TOLD that the AD, and Coach told him IF he ever tested positive he would be gone for good, He would be tested at least once a month. He was told if he caused discent in the lockerroom he would be gone, they told his grandmother that she needed to stay out of the program other than support of her grandson. I was told that before Wille showed up he had a talk With TJ and TJ said this was his second chance but his last chance here, SO if he stepped over the line he would be gone.

YES I agree 4 stars don't mean squat...Amobi Okoye was not considered anything but a baby sitting job. Louisville has made thier name on getting players that were not 4 stars but were great players and could fit the system. NOW we are getting some 4stars but our others are what makes our team.

My biggest fear of this season is I don't know how Coach K will be, We have the talent but will they buy into the system. How can a coach take a 12-1 team and not change too much but make that system his own.

Hey, bro! I'm not a hater, but you made my point!! Louisville has, of late, gotten picked to be a top 5 team, a BCS contendah, but they wind up giving away games that they outta win. Are you saying you should NOT have beaten USF? If so, why was it a "dumb loss"? I like Louisville. They're exciting, fun to watch. I like to see 'em win. I just think it is WVU's time.

they always manage to lose when they shouldn't

I am saying over the last 3 years they have lost ONE game that they should not have...NOT ALWAYS... the other losses were to highly rated teams. WVU, Rutgers and Miami All at their home. one in triple OT, one a last second fg the other Had out back not dropped the INT miami would not have won...

NOW I can understand why SOME are picking WVU... but Louisville rarely lose games when they shouldn't. WE have the Second longest Home win streak second to USC. It has been over 1300 days since the Ville has lost at home.

TC -- you're a Cardinals fan, and I respect that. I concede -- mostly 8)

I won't say too much on it since they whupped Bama pretty good (35-0, I think it was) in a bowl game years back.

Anyway, I will be in Tuscaloosa Saturday to watch Alabama play the feisty Catamounts of Western Carolina (yeah, that's sarcasm). I hope Saban at least has learned from Mike Shula not to leave his QB in against them too long .... Shula left Croyle in in the Tide game against W. Carolina when Bama was up 38-0 (I was screaming!!), and of course, when you play with less than 100% intensity and concentration in a runaway game, injuries happen. Croyle tore his ACL, and it wound up probably costing us the Tennessee game that went into 5 overtimes that year.

What I'm looking for from Bama this year is not W-L, but game management. That's what I want to see improved more than even the defensive front. You can recruit past thin talent, but you can't recruit game managers in pads when the coach is just in over his head, as Mike Shula was (although, I remain a BIG Shula fan b/c he is a homer and he did his best, and he is the son of my beloved Don Shula).

I have a few friends that are bama fans and they are card fans as well, THEY hate when ever anyone says anything about that game.

Louisville is right at the edge of getting respect. It sorta hurts you have games sch and teams back out so we end up playing Murray state. I understand. Why would a USC take the chance at a loss when they can play an easy OOC game and build their numbers.
