Hey, how 'bout them Mountaineers .... from Appalachian State!?!
That QB is sharp and quick. I was stunned by the score, saw very little of the game except what I saw walking around campus at U of A on Saturday, peeping in at tailgaters' TVs. A lot of teams found themselves with work to do --- Michigan, Auburn, Tennessee, and I'd put Texas in there, too. Alabama has got a lot of work to do on defense especially and the kicking game is going to be a weak spot all season. I had no idea how thin our defensive talent had become until today, but I will say for them that they swarm to the ball very well. They lack the size and speed to be a really good defensive team, and when we play our SEC schedule, we're going to be behind the 8 ball a lot. Our offense is as loaded as I've seen Bama in several years, going as far back as 1999. So, I think we'll be competitive against some good teams, but I still think we are underdogs against our main rivals (Auburn and UT) and esp. LSU and Georgia, and the FSU game could get be a score-fest.
I was VERY pleased with our coaching. I've never seen the overall discipline and preparedness that we had on Saturday, at least not in the last 10 years. In some ways, it was a well oiled machine the way the players paced the game. Quick to the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, we only used 1 time out the whole game. So, there were some bright spots, things that are clearly the result of having Nick Saban there. The defensive play was soft on coverage. We'll get beat up in the air this season in some games. But, we'll give as good as we get, I think, too, on offense. And, our starting QB better keep his eyes open for the progress of his back up, who looked head and shoulders better on accuracy.
So, the season is off and running. I'm glad.
