thoughts on College football polls after week one

Postby TC » September 5th, 2007, 12:32 am

It just goes to show that early polls don't mean squat, they are guesses about how much a teams has changed over the summer with out even looking at them. All you really have to go by is how much did they lose and if they LOST. Michigan lost its last two games, that in its self shows they were overrated to start the season rated 5.

Are they a top ten team...NO but they are not in the 30's as well, I think they should have been started in the first polls around 17-22 range.

Why were they so High?.......THE talking heads know the B10 is one of the worst conferences this year, they know that with them and the ACC being so low they needed to build up at least one B10 team. IF Michigan had done ok being started in the top 5 and a weak B10 they could have stayed in the top 10 most of the season.

Do the preseason polls really matter? ..... No and Yes. NO because no one really knows much about any team. Alot of the "voters" are just reading what other "voters" have written. Alot of coaches are really only looking at their team and who they play. Why look at how MI is if you don't play them. Most coaches don't vote anyway they have assistants do it.... So no they don't matter.

BUT Yes they matter because if you are NOT in the top 10 to start the season you have no shot at the National Championship because to move up you have to win out and hope everyone above you loses at least one or two games. Like last year, OSU was on top at the start of the season, playing in a weak B10, did not lose and people thought they were good because they beat (a weak) Mi team ( which was being proped up in the polls)It showed in the game against FLA.

The Ville needs keep winning and to stay in the 5-8 range for 3 weeks, then move to the 3-5 range and then after beating WVU/Rutgers into the top 2. We don't need big jumps in the polls Unless everyone above us loses one or two games.

I don't Like WVU being so High, NO not because I don't think they are a good team, but there is only one way to go... DOWN. I wish they were around 5 now and slowly move up... UNTIL the VILLE beats them and then drop to 7-8 range and stay there the rest of the season... (Got to look at thru RED Glasses)

I would rather all of the BE be UNDER Rated and Move up then OVER rated and drop. I think that last year the ACC was over rated and most people realized it at the end, and Now they are seeing the B10 is the same as ACC last year. I think it is showing that just because your team has a HISTORY of being good, that does not mean squat if your team has not been good over the last 5 years.

Overall I think the polls are alot more in line with reality Now then they were the first week. I read some where, some of the talking heads are saying "Maybe we should not have polls until after the first week is over". Sort of like the BCS not coming out till some of the first games play out. well that is most likely a good thing but it will never happen... People need to sell mags and TV shows. They need to write something so we and all talk about it.

TC - Again you state some things very well and I agree with most of your post. However, allow me to give you another spin on it. The preseason polls are good for two things.

First - it allows you and I and thousands like us to debate on who's #1 etc. Gives us something to talk about for several months till the games are played.

Second - it's great for recruiting. You can walk into a kids house and show him the poll and this is what people across America think of us and our program. So it helps sell the program.

Other than that, they are not worth the paper they are written on. That's why in another post I stated I was going to wait till probably the first week of Oct. to announce my Top Ten. For a couple of reasons. 1st - I'm not sure aside from USC - LSU who needs to be in the top ten. I'm not convinced how good WVU is Texas, UL, Wisconsin or any of the rest. I think CAL maybe a top ten team.

All of those teams are just one injury away from being so so. Regardless of how good Hunter is he is no Brohm, as Brown is no White, and Devine is no Slaton.
If I were to read, much less answer, all the attacks made on me, this shop might as well be closed for business. I do the very best I know how, the very best I can, and I mean to keep doing so until the end. If the end brings me out right, what is said against me won't amount to anything. If the end brings me out wrong, ten angels swearing I was right will make no difference." -Abraham Lincoln

Well Hunter would be a starter on most teams, I think he is better than woodson. It has already been stated that he is believed to be a solid second round pick. Not many starting QB's can say that much less second string. I think Devine is GOING to be a good player but as a Frosh he will need at least 4-5 games to really make an impact UNLESS Slaton goes down and he HAS to be that impact.

I think that is my way of saying what I think you are saying.

HEY they already have basketball polls and mags out... (vital has us 6) but I am not sure when the AP/ Coaches poll will come out. BUT it can't be long Prac starts I think oct 12 or 15
