This weekend made me sick. Literally. I spent Saturday at my office, but I could neither get the work done or listen to Bama-Vandy because my head was over the .... well, I'll spare you that.
By the way, thanks to the daycare my daughter goes to for the little weekend gift you delivered to our household!
Anyway, here's my thoughts, limited as they are and skewed --
1. Alabama. I continue to be pleased with game management and the astronomic improvement over Mike Shula's conduct of the game. It is like two different universes of football existence. They don't even compare. Decisions made economically, process is king, and everyone is playing a far smarter game even though execution still lacks in many respects. No matter what the score is after we play Arkansas this weekend, I will be smiling if we are managed, ran and operate as smartly as has been done in these first two games. Roll Tide.
2. Auburn. Already in Alabama, the Tuberville post mortems are flying. It is strange how this coach, venerated by Auburn faithful while Bama was after a new coach, boasted about as having a winning record against Nick Saban (which he does) after we hired NS, and generally being touted as the best thing since peanut butter is, after two less than stellar outings and one certainly surprising loss is now ready for the scrap heap, according to those very same fans. Now, to be fair, Bama fans are no better on balance. And, Paul Finebaum (if you're in Alabama, you know him) is the instigator-in-chief of these negative-nellies on both sides of the state. Let me say this and I'll stand or fall on it, whatever: Brandon Cox will have a good season for Auburn at QB, and they will not lose more than 4 games this year. I would only have predicted 3, at worst, before Saturday, but that one's in the books and it was one they should've won. I still say they beat Alabama and Arkansas, lose to LSU and Florida and I still say UGA is a toss up. The Auburn we saw on Saturday is not the Auburn we'll see for the rest of the year. Bank on it.
3. Louisville: Good offense. No defense. I'm sorry, but I just can't get excited for them yet. When they play some defense --- just some --- against a decent team and still ring up 35 or more points and win, I'll give them some love. Right now, I'm just remembering last week's game and wondering how I missed the news that Rick Patino (sp?) was named their football coach.
4. WVU: Didn't see them play, but nothing noteworthy from this team yet. Still too early to say if they've been overhyped. Still, they didn't give up 42 points to ... who was it?
5. Michigan and Notre Dame: 0-4 between them. I don't care who you are, this is good news. Lloyd Carr is on his way out after this season, no matter what, dontcha think?? Is Les Miles going to be the next UM coach?? Hmmmmm. Will Jimbo Fisher return to LSU or remain in Tallahassee to await the nice men in white coats to escort Bobby Bowden off the field?
6. This weekend, by how many points will Florida beat the spread against UT. Now, I'm not a fan of the spread offense. I don't like it, and I think it is beatable by solid defense (remember Auburn last year .. the only team in America to beat the eventual NC's? -- they did it with D, as did Alabama the year before). UT is typically sound top to bottom. I'm not convinced this year. Florida not only wins this game outright, but leaves the spread in the dust; I predict Florida wins 39-18.
7. Can anybody stop LSU before they make the BCS Championship Game? Yup, they can. Who? Florida. Right now, I don't see anyone else doing it. Will they, though? Can't say. Will be THE game of the year in the SEC, though, IMO.
