Oral Roberts University scandal

Postby DaJudge » October 6th, 2007, 2:35 pm

I saw this in the Atlanta Journal today:

Scandal Brewing at Oral Roberts
By JUSTIN JUOZAPAVICIUS
Associated Press Writer

TULSA, Okla. — Twenty years ago, televangelist Oral Roberts said he was reading a spy novel when God appeared to him and told him to raise $8 million for Roberts' university, or else he would be "called home."

Now, his son, Oral Roberts University President Richard Roberts, says God is speaking again, telling him to deny lurid allegations in a lawsuit that threatens to engulf this 44-year-old Bible Belt college in scandal.

Richard Roberts is accused of illegal involvement in a local political campaign and lavish spending at donors' expense, including numerous home remodeling projects, use of the university jet for his daughter's senior trip to the Bahamas, and a red Mercedes convertible and a Lexus SUV for his wife, Lindsay.

She is accused of dropping tens of thousands of dollars on clothes, awarding nonacademic scholarships to friends of her children and sending scores of text messages on university-issued cell phones to people described in the lawsuit as "underage males."

At a chapel service this week on the 5,300-student campus known for its 60-foot-tall bronze sculpture of praying hands, Roberts said God told him: "We live in a litigious society. Anyone can get mad and file a lawsuit against another person whether they have a legitimate case or not. This lawsuit ... is about intimidation, blackmail and extortion."

San Antonio televangelist John Hagee, a member of the ORU board of regents, said the university's executive board "is conducting a full and thorough investigation."

Colleagues fear for the reputation of the university and the future of the Roberts' ministry, which grew from Southern tent revivals to one of the most successful evangelical empires in the country, hauling in tens of millions of dollars in contributions a year. The university reported nearly $76 million in revenue in 2005, according to the IRS.

Oral Roberts is 89 and lives in California. He holds the title of chancellor, but the university describes him as semi-retired, and his son presides over day-to-day operations on the campus, which had a modern, space-age design when it was built in the early 1960s but now looks dated, like Disney's Tomorrowland.

Cornell Cross II, a senior from Burlington, Vt., said he is looking to transfer to another school because the scandal has "severely devalued and hurt the reputation of my degree."

"We have asked and asked and asked to see the finances of our school and what they're doing with our money, and we've been told no," said, Cross who is majoring in government. "Now we know why. As a student, I'm not going to stand for it any longer."

The allegations are contained in a lawsuit filed Tuesday by three former professors. They sued ORU and Roberts, alleging they were wrongfully dismissed after reporting the school's involvement in a local political race.

Richard Roberts, according to the suit, asked a professor in 2005 to use his students and university resources to aid a county commissioner's bid for Tulsa mayor. Such involvement would violate state and federal law because of the university's nonprofit status. Up to 50 students are alleged to have worked on the campaign.

The professors also said their dismissals came after they turned over to the board of regents a copy of a report documenting moral and ethical lapses on the part of Roberts and his family. The internal document was prepared by Stephanie Cantese, Richard Roberts' sister-in-law, according to the lawsuit.

An ORU student repairing Cantese's laptop discovered the document and later provided a copy to one of the professors.

It details dozens of alleged instances of misconduct. Among them:

_ A longtime maintenance employee was fired so that an underage male friend of Mrs. Roberts could have his position.

_ Mrs. Roberts — who is a member of the board of regents and is referred to as ORU's "first lady" on the university's Web site — frequently had cell-phone bills of more than $800 per month, with hundreds of text messages sent between 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. to "underage males who had been provided phones at university expense."

_ The university jet was used to take one daughter and several friends on a senior trip to Orlando, Fla., and the Bahamas. The $29,411 trip was billed to the ministry as an "evangelistic function of the president."

_ Mrs. Roberts spent more than $39,000 at one Chico's clothing store alone in less than a year, and had other accounts in Texas and California. She also repeatedly said, "As long as I wear it once on TV, we can charge it off." The document cites inconsistencies in clothing purchases and actual usage on TV.

_ Mrs. Roberts was given a white Lexus SUV and a red Mercedes convertible by ministry donors.

_ University and ministry employees are regularly summoned to the Roberts' home to do the daughters' homework.

_ The university and ministry maintain a stable of horses for exclusive use by the Roberts' children.

_ The Roberts' home has been remodeled 11 times in the past 14 years.

Tim Brooker, one of the professors who sued, said he fears for the university's survival if certain changes aren't made.

"All over that campus, there are signs up that say, `And God said, build me a university, build it on my authority, and build it on the Holy Spirit,'" Brooker said. "Unfortunately, ownership has shifted."

I always thought Richard Roberts was a shyster.

Learned it from his father, no doubt. My grandparents were stuck in "the poor line" at one of Oral Roberts healing crusades when their 2 year old little girl was dying. They were literally divided up into a different section for prayer based on the fact they didn't have much to give. Mr. Roberts then proceeded to swiftly pass by the line with his hand merely outstretched. Their little girl passed away shortly after. I suppose he saved all the healing God had given his "right hand" for the rich people.

What more can one expect from a ministry that is built from the start on deceit?

It seems that most all of the "great faith healers" of the 20th century got their inspiration from the memoirs of men like Joseph Smith and his tale of golden plates and divine visitation of angels:

Seems like a great opportunity to hold these brothers in Christ up in prayer. I have nothing but the utmost respect and honor for Oral Roberts. If the allegations against Richard and Lindsey are true, God will deal with them in His own way, and I'm certain my two cents won't be in the ratio. Positvely, the Truth will prevail, however painful.

That's the kind of seismic shift the church needs to take - praying for those brothers/sisters who get lured into eating forbidden fruit. Truth be known, we might all be guilty of the same fluff if placed in the same situation.

I'm gonna surprize a few folks here, but I undertake to refrain from commenting. Even if Richard & Lindsey Roberts are headed for prison over this, they are still God's kids, and I'm not gonna form a weapon against them that won't prosper. Lord knows, and I am finally coming to understand, that I have no ground to scream for their heads from.

David he had the chance to kill Saul, but he refused because Saul was God's Annointed. The Roberts family may not be entitled to the same consideration for the same reason, but the church needs to show them love, even if the extent of that love is simply not to sit in judgement on them. Rightly or wrongly, there will be enough garbage thrown on their heads over this by folks outside the family of God.

Mike Vande, we don't know each other. But, the side of you that I see today makes me so proud of you, I just want to shout around the room. Wait, I think I will shout for the Glory of God. Continue to be all you can be for the Lord. Bless you.
God Bless,
Jan

Be careful of the Words you use!!

Postby germanshepherd » October 8th, 2007, 4:29 pm

I would encourage to be a little careful of the words you use. I realize that most people do not know this, but from living 9 years in Germany I learned a few things. The final word in your statement if literally translated is not a good word or name to call someone from a Christians standpoint.

[quote="I always thought Richard Roberts was a shyster.[/quote]

The German word is actually "scheister" and the first part of it is equivalent to "s _ _ t." So, be careful little mouth what you say.

I as well feel that we need to lift the Roberts, the university, and the Christian community up in prayer for the tainting of the Image of God that is taking place. Whatever the results, let us stand in the gap for possibly one that has "fallen."

I don't speak German, and that is not the accepted meaning in English, so, whatever. (But your purported German definition is not an inappropriate description of Richard Roberts).

Sorry ya'll but he, and his father have always been crooks. Remember the whole, "God is going to take me home if you all don't send me $1 million for Oral Robert University" scam? Give me a break.

Judge, I would have rushed to agree with you not that long ago. And Oral Roberts Ministries aren't likely to get any contributions from me unless a 500 foot Jesus tells me he's gonna take me home if I don't give to them.

This stuff about the Roberts an their ministry may all be true, and the other things that have come down from that ministry may have been as bogus as a 500 foot dollar bill. But in terms of what our duty as Christians is, that's irrelevant to those of us who are not involved in the investigation, and to whom the ministry and it's members are not accountable.

If your son or brother were accused of a crime, would you be out in public telling anyone who would listen what you think the reasons to believe the accusations are? I suspect that you wouldn't be venturing opinions, and at worst, a red-faced silence would be your answer to any and all who asked or kidded you about it, regardless of your opinion of their guilt, because they are family.

I want to be forgiven and treated with mercy for my transgressions, and Jesus said if I want to be forgiven, I must forgive. Forgiveness doen not mean allowing corruption to go on unchecked, but it does mean not publically disparaging our Father's other kids. They are family, and you don't air your family linen in public.

We should withhold donations from them if we think they aren't using the ones they recieve correctly. If they are doctrinally off base, we should say so and why, with scriptural backup. But calling them names simply isn't within our purview as children of God.

God says vengence is His, He will repay, and it's His Name that is being dragged through the mud. I believe it is our job as Christians to refuse to take part infurther soiling Our Father's Name by refraining from making snide remarks about the Roberts family. We should, rather, be praying that the truth be found and dealt with pointedly and effectually through the correct channels of investigation and accountability. If the investigation shows wrong has been done and need for repentance and restitution and continuing accountability and supervision of the ministry needed, I pray that Richard and Lindsey and anyone else involved make a sincere repentance, so they can be restored and not lost. That is what scripture says is God's Will.

Did you ever think that this could actually be a referendum on the entire prosperity movement if that were attacked instead of the people involved in it? The Robert's preach the standard Tulsa prosperity doctrine, and have for a very long time. Frankly, even if the accusations against them are true, they are only living like they believe earthly prosperity is God's will for His children, which they do. The thing to challenge, if the need to challenge is there, is not the Robert's credibility or lifestyle, but rather the doctrine it's based on.

This is exactly what I was thinking- the Roberts likely did not see any wrong with much of what they (may have) been doing because of the extremes of prosperity teaching that have so permeated. I believe we should pray and God will use this for His glory.
God is in control and He gives warnings to his people and leads us by His kindness to repentance.

BTW, yesterday I briefly saw Joyce Meyer teaching, "prosperity for a purpose"- that we can be entrusted with finances for the purpose of helping and sharing with others- and she also mentioned God's blessings coming to us in other ways besides finances.. it was good.

I believe God can use this "scandal" to bring a correction to the body of Christ regarding the excesses in the prosperity movement.

for which Christ took hold of me.

Oral Roberts University Scandal

Postby Dr. Ron » October 9th, 2007, 5:55 am

As one who has been falsely accused and had to defend myself, I would like to say that these people may be innocent of the charges....but who cares.
It is much more "fullfilling" to believe the dirt and let jealousy and gossip ruin something that has done good for the world.

I know the Roberts. I understand what it means to be scrutinized for everything you do. Do I think they were right IF the allegations are true? I don't know the bylaws of their organization nor what their salary options and packages are. Nor do any of us....so we cannot make a judgement on that.

I just know it is hard enough to fight the devil everyday and then let us have an issue of any kind and our own brothers want to devour us as well.

Do I agree with all the stuff that has come out of that school??? Of course not....I don't agree with anyone all the time....nor do any of us. But I do pray that they get a fair hearing....certainly I didn't..... without it destroying a marriage and a home. Hey "dajudge" wait till you hear all the evidence ......or is that still part of the protocol?

Just pray for them....this is a hard time for them.
Dr. Ron
