Mea culpa. I stand corrected! When you get old, your memory goes crazy.

I really THOUGHT the Yellow Deli was in Dalton Georgia... I missed it by a few miles. It was on Ringgold Road in East Ridge. There's a website!

The Yellow Deli

I sat in there and ate sandwiches and listened to Evie and Chuck Girard and expanded my narrow view of what Christianity was all about.

Which song was it that said "And B.W. got mad, and then he said "Get out on the double"?? I loved that one. Had the cassette, but lost it. It's probably warped somewhere in the attic now. I'd love to have Adoration on CD or the computer.

I do hate to hear that, Ron. I've been caught in the holiness crossfires and it's not fun. :-)

Regarding the group, we loved having them at Marietta. We had a monthly concert series and were so blown away by them we had them several more times and talked about making them the "house band." Tony let me keep a cassette of the songs but asked me to not make a copy since the songs weren't copywritten. I remember laying in my bed with a walkman soaking up those songs until one day, to my horror, the cassette broke. :-(

Glad you caught that PG.

I took my wife (29+ years now) on our first date there. I actually borrowed 5 bucks and bought a sandwich, chips , and a coke for each of us there. What more could a TC student ask for? The music was great.

If any of you guys remember Channel Three (Peggy Burton, Greg Stephens and myself), we got "buked" many times for our song choices. One in particular, "No, You May Not," we sang at an afterglow in the Conn Center. The week after the Assembly, we got a HOT letter of rebuke from the state of NC, shaming us for "singing to the devil," and even for how we were dressed.

This thread is a sad commentary and shows ONE of the reasons the organization is in the shape it is in.

The organization is just fine in many places... just not in the southeastern U.S. so much. We are thriving and expanding in the South Pacific, and looking forward to great things; but we are not waiting for instructions from Cleveland, either.

Gary said, "The organization is just fine in many places... just not in the southeastern U.S. so much. We are thriving and expanding in the South Pacific, and looking forward to great things; ....."

The organization is fine in North Carolina (Southeastern U.S.) also.

Mike, I wasn't from NC at that time, but please allow me to apolgize about your experience from 20 something years ago. Most of that attitude and opinion are no longer part of our "concerns" in the Tarheel state.

We also are thriving and expanding. Reports come to the State Office weekly of pastors/churches who are experiencing growth in many ways. Revival fires are spreading. Hunger for God and His righteousness is prominent. Spiritual maturity is becoming the norm. Pastors/churches are receiving and baptizing 10 or more individuals each month. Two of our churches have received 60 new members at a time. Serveral churches are in multi-million dollar building and expansion programs. Thinking outside of the box is acceptable and encouraged. Partnership with other Christians is encouraged and accepted. Partnership with community and civic organizations is encouraged and accepted. Leadership development is ongoing. The COGOP in NC is looking very favorable to Independant churches and some have united with us.

To God be the Glory!

Sophie, I vote Yellow Deli for next TC reunion. My wife (of 29 + years,) and I will be there.

Aloha, friend... I think you know that no offense was intended, and I didn't intend to paint with a broad brush... but I am glad it drew you into a post and out of the lurker shadows!

I was responding, of course, to "This thread is a sad commentary and shows ONE of the reasons the organization is in the shape it is in." that was part of an exchange between people from Tennessee, Florida, Kentucky, etc., hence my reference to the Southeastern U.S.

Now that ought to draw E.C. out of lurkerville!

No offense taken.

Just thought that I would share the changes in the Church of God's "First State."

Hey, I'm just glad that Mike didn't get the rebuke from good old AL.

Now if I just knew how to use those emoticons.

Pardon me while I retreat back to the shadows and dig my firmly implanted tongue from my cheek.

Very sweet, and sincere. Thanks for those kind words. I held/hold no ill feelings. Believe me, after being in music ministry for 40+ years (and in COGOP is was extremely "lime-light-ish") I have seen and heard it all, and learned early on to let go, brush off, and move on.

God bless you and your calling to work in His vineyard in NC, and, thanks also for sharing the good news of what is happening there! :)

According to the Yellow Deli wikipedia page, they did have one in Dalton, GA, too... so you were both right.

AHA!

Thank you! I was sure the one I went to was in North Georgia, because I remember who introduced me to the place, etc. I feel so much less... like I'm losing crucial brain cells.
