The Lion King is, without a doubt, the most amazing live theatrical production I have experienced; I said "
experienced" instead of "
seen" because it is so much more than just another show.
The lighting, staging, orchestration, costuming, pupeteering, dancing, vocals, acting... the total package was simply world class. Try to remember the name "Trevor Jackson" because I expect to hear a lot from him in years to come. He alternates in role of the young Simba, and was just electrifying very moment he was on stage.
The African woman who plays "Rafiki" is named Gugwana Dlamini and she has a pitch-perfect voice and stage presence that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up. (She was the voice on the soundtrack recording, also.)
We sat dead center, front row -- I was right behind the woman who was the musical conductor, and she turned around and struck up a conversation with us before the curtain; turns out she is friends with a local theatrical lighting person my daughter has worked closely with... small world.
If the Broadway Tour comes to your city, go see this show! It is a feast for the eyes, the ears, the heart...
