What happens during an average two hour concert

Postby paul » October 18th, 2007, 11:31 am

Hey ! did you realize that when someone spends two hours at a concert the following is happening around the world ?

1. 9,100 rural poor migrate to cities
2. 4,560 people moved into urban slums
3. 274 people began supporting themselves only by collecting garbage
4. 5,430 children under age five died from preventable starvation-related causes
5. $87 miillion was given to all Christian Causes ( 3% of Christian income)
6. 13,600 people became new viewer/listeners of Christian broadcasting
7. 40 Christian died for their faith witness
You cannot effectively love and minister to others when you are obsessed with protecting
and preserving yourself.

All true, and yet

Postby Pastor Gary » October 18th, 2007, 1:49 pm

All true, Paul, and yet I don't believe all Christians staying home and skipping the 2 hours of a concert now and then would change those stats very much. It is not a zero sum game. It's like the mom who tells her kids "Eat your spinach; don't you know there are kids starving in Africa?"

Whether the kid eats the spinach or not has zero impact on whether a kid in Africa starves... they won't bundle up the uneaten spinach and FedEx it to alleviate hunger in a village in Darfur... it will go down the disposal.

"God is excited to show you mercy. He rises to give you His compassion." (Isaiah 30:18)

"For surely, O LORD, you bless the righteous;
you surround them with your favor as with a shield." (Psalm 5:12)

Gee, I wonder how much of that happens in my own town when I go to a concert.

Of course, that is about the same amount of time that folks spend in church on Sunday mornings, and the same stuff is happening then, too. And, if you multiply that times 4, you'll see how many people you are letting down while you work your job every day. And, no matter where you go in the world to try and help, somewhere the same things will be happening wherever you don't happen to be.

It makes no sense to do anything, since it will all keep happening no matter what we do. So, let's all just stay home, hide under our beds, and hope we don't do anything to make it worse, since we can't possibly make it better.
Why is it that bad decisions seem to make to most interesting testimonies?
