Is "Expository preaching" ever practiced by COGOP ministers?

Every Wednesday night in the youth room at Bellshire (the artist formerly known as Madison) Church of God of Prophecy.

It took us about 45 weeks to work through the Sermon on the Mount and I felt like I rushed parts of it.

We are working our way through the book of Matthew, studying what it means to be a disciple of Christ.

yes. :) but before saying more, would need a definition of your perception of what it means. :)

In my experience discussing it, it means preaching Calvinism. ;)
For the truth that lies at the heart of theology is not something there to be discovered, but something, or rather someone, to whom we must surrender. The mystery of faith is not ultimately something that invites our questioning, but something that questions us.

From Theopedia:

Expository preaching is a kind of preaching that expounds upon the meaning of a particular text or passage of Scripture.

"One defining characteristic of expository preaching is that it does not dwell on non-biblical examples. It does not focus on stories, jokes and anecdotes.
Instead, it seeks to stay focused on the text in question." -Tim Challies

The reason I asked is I recently came across the term and realized it was describing a type of preaching that in fourty plus years of church going I have never heard.

Most preaching I hear and have heard in COGOP is stories, jokes and ancedotes held together (either firmly or somewhat loosely) by one or two scriptures.

My hearty commendation to You Mr Danger, Teach, and Rambo.

Calvinism is not required for that type of preaching, but I have found most who preach that way tend to be Calvinist.

I will admit to the (lame) jokes being added every once in a while for the youths sake and stories to apply the scripture to their lives. However, the scripture dictates the direction, discussion, thought process of the service.

In a recent

In a recent sermon I had 17 different scriptures "listed", I'm sure I hit many more, for one sermon, some with multiple verses expounding on a subject.

Does that count?
What we need here is a good revival! lol

you have to mainly use one portion of scripture and expound mainly on it. You can bring in other scriptures to support your message, but the majority of the message must come from that text in order for it to be an exposity message. You also have to have a list one points from that text.

I took an excellent class in expository preaching at my home church in Marietta when I was a teenager. Most of my pastors have preached this style.

I have had two classes on Expository preaching and I enjoy it. This is pretty much how I preach... I don't know enough stories to preach two hours and I don't know enough jokes either.

in fact, is how I preach/teach. (or more accurately what I want to preach/teach. no mentor or help makes it best guess at presentation :) )
