You cannot effectively love and minister to others when you are obsessed with protecting
and preserving yourself.

I thought the article's assessment of what the responses implied (that even the most "rule-bound Christians" will re-examine Scriptures' meaning when they seem "unjust to them") was the most interesting part of it. The inescapable truth is that evangelicals divorce as much or more than the general population, and for a group of people who -- across all flavors -- stands publicly as guards of truth in culture, we've steered our practice away from our preachin'. So, either we change what we do or we change what we say -- and either way, lose something of our integrity in terms of "say what you mean and mean what you say". OR, another option is to nail down our shoes on the matter, like John Piper did in his response, and live with the "injustice" of the result -- very unappetizing for most of us, or we figure out real, successful ways to accommodate and genuinely help people who divorce while we remain fast to the harder commitment against remarriage -- which is very unattainable for most of us. The easiest thing to do, it seems to me, is to reread the passages, reexamine the context and see if we have something wrong, and I think the CT article's author has done that, even if it "weak" and "tragic" in the way he goes about it, as John Piper said. The wisest thing to do??? HA! One person, one relationship at a time, one circumstance at a time, love one another is all I know to do. I do believe, though, if something ever happened where my wife and I were to divorce, I'd be done with the whole marriage thing. I'm spoiled on the one I got to want to spend another 20 years breaking in another one. :P
