Word Power question: Do People look at you slack jawed?

Postby Gerald Creasy » November 8th, 2007, 11:55 am

TW,

Do People look at you slack jawed when and if you use these words in normal everyday conversation???

I mean. I had the highest Vocabulary in my High School class AND generally Ace the Increase your Word Power thingees in the Readers Digest.

(I have been known to walk into a business and ask the mangager WHY his sign said "Now Excepting Applications!")

Im finding in the Real world people look at me like I fell out of a tree.
I was once punched for saying someone looked "dapper" in his new Sports coat (HI Scooter!) and caused mass confusion by using the word "pontificate".

I don't do this on purpose; thought it would be quite fun to do so.

I used the word "accommodate" with 2 of our store employees a few months ago. One is a HS graduate, one is a senior in HS. They both looked at me like I was speaking in Chinese. I asked, "You don't know what I just meant, do you?" They looked at each other as if to make sure he or she wasn't the only one, and when they both kind of grinned at each other, said together, "No." A simple, common word like accommodate. The younger people are, the dumber I talk on purpose. I'm discovering it is the only way to get them to understand. I've come real close to just drawing pictures, but I'm afraid one of them would try to steal my fat pencil.
