Lifehouse on the Parade..

Postby Jennifer Smith » November 22nd, 2007, 6:35 am

Lifehouse was singing on a float in the Macy's Parade a few minutes ago..

which led my daughter and I to ask.. we've heard of them, we've heard their song "Hanging By a Moment" on the radio and can sing the words, but are they are a Christian band?
..I press on to take hold of that
for which Christ took hold of me.

They have that "Christian band" sound. I picked up on that myself. Upon reading the biography at their website, it appears they are a secular band with some strict religious upbringing.

They are a secular band but they are one of our favorites. They definitely have a lot of spiritual songs, but not outright Christian ones. They talk about struggles and wanting to do right, some songs aren't directed blatantly to God but can be perceived that way.

Some examples of our favorites:

Breathing

Everything

Storm

You really have to hear the songs to appreciate them. "Everything" is the song that was used in the skit that's popular right now.

Secular/Christian

Postby Pastor Gary » November 22nd, 2007, 10:32 am

I think they resist being labeled a "Christian band." They are Christians in a band. One of our favorite worship songs (did it last week) is by Lifehouse, and is not on any of their recordings!
"God is excited to show you mercy. He rises to give you His compassion." (Isaiah 30:18)

"For surely, O LORD, you bless the righteous;
you surround them with your favor as with a shield." (Psalm 5:12)

These thoughts from a 2005 Christianity Today article seem to support you.

Christianity Today wrote:Also relatively downplayed on this album is the lyrical spirituality. Though Lifehouse got its start in a Vineyard church out of Los Angeles, they've never been one to wear faith on their sleeve. Yet while they weren't overtly written and open to multiple interpretations, Christians could find enough to assume where Wade was coming from. This time, many of the songs reflect on Wade coming to grips with the divorce of his missionary parents when he was twelve, and his strained relationship with his father since then. "Better Luck Next Time" in particular touches on this: "Sometimes we fall/Ain't nothing new to me/Don't get me wrong/I'm a son you gave up for this child." There's similar melancholic reflection in "Walking Away," and "Into the Sun" seems to assess these relationships today.

Yet while the Christianity is more downplayed on Lifehouse, listeners can't say these songs definitively aren't about faith, just as previous songs weren't necessarily only about faith either.
