you surround them with your favor as with a shield." (Psalm 5:12)

That was a reference to E. W. Kenyon, regarded by many to be the father of the hyper-faith movement... "Name-it-and-claim-it" and one who, it is believed, heavily influenced the doctrinal views of Kenneth Hagin, Kenneth Copeland and other "Word of Faith" preachers.

I would add to this that several books document the occultic origins of Kenyon's teachings.

I read a statement by Gregg Harris, a homeschool pioneer, talking about his church which is associated with Sovereign Grace Ministries. This is a Reformed Charismatic church led by CJ Mahaney, and in which John Piper speaks from time to time.

He said, "...we believe in fire, we just believe in keeping it in the fireplace where it belongs..."

I think that is where a lot of Pentacostal/Charasmatic churches got off track years ago, and why we still have a bad rap today. We used to not believe the service was good unless the whole BUILDING was on fire.

Fire can warm (I Corinthians - Paul's instruction) or fire can burm (I Corinthians - the Corinthians!). I believe our church has in times past gotten away from sound teaching and gotten so involved in the "fire" that we let some biblical principals go by the wayside....just like the Corinthians. Teaching = Tongues by only 2-3 and then only with intrepretation or else keep it to yourself. Practice = tens or hundreds or THOUSANDS all speaking in tongues enmasse.

I think that is part of what Gerald is angered or outraged (sorry for the 80's TV reference) about. Actually, I can see the problems, and they are troublesome to me as well.....I'm just not turning green yet!
The Bible calls children a blessing and debt a curse, but in our culture we apply for curses and reject blessings.
