1Has there been a split National Champ since the BCS?
The potential has been there, I just don't remember.
Yes there has. Jan. 1, 2003 it was when LSU defeated Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl, and USC defeated Michigan in the Rose Bowl. The BCS championship game was LSU/OK and LSU was the Coaches Poll National Champion and the AP gave it to USC.
#2 What does it take to have a conference recognized as a BCS conference? All Conferences are recognized by the BCS and ND as an independent.
#3 Why even have an At Large BCS bid?
If you choose to be an independant, then not getting a BCS bid goes along with that choice. Only allow BCS conferences in a BCS bow
Paully, I'm not sure I understand your statement. However, there are still some conferences if their champion is not playing for the NC then they have automatic tie-ins. e.g. Rose will get the Big 10/Pac-10 champ. Fiesta will get Big 12, Sugar the SEC, the Orange the ACC. Then in order to be an at-large team the Big East Champ is always an at-large selection, ND qualifies if they finish in the top 8; and leagues like the Sun Belt, WAC. MWC, MAC their champ qualifies if they finish in the top 12.
