I could understand if they were charging a fee for using a non-Credit Card Debit associated Debit, but if they're charging a fee for using a VISA associated card they're passing along a fee that the business is charged by VISA everytime a VISA card is used.

If they do that for VISA debits and not VISA credit, that's pretty disreputable, in my opinion.

(My ex used to work in credit card fraud (and even won an award from VISA) and I learned a lot of things about Credit cards)

If such things begin happening around here...it will definitely curtail the use of a debit card BY ME.

I have Visa-debit card thru my credit union. This practice of charging to use a debit happens alot around here. Safeway and some of the larger retailers don't though. Fast food chains, local hardware store, "convience" stores, they all do.
Let the wild rumpus start!

I wonder if it is a west coast thing ? At first it was very rare, but I've noticed that the amount is starting to really creap up. And more and more places are charging.

PastorAbles don't you run a store ? Does the bank charge you for processing ATM's

Be careful with those debit cards guys. If a crook gets ahold of it, they can clean out your bank account

I can do that pretty good myself :D .... I hardly ever keep cash because some of the people I work with decide they need to borrow it (without asking).............

If you use a "Check card" with a Visa logo, ALWAYS run it as a Credit Card and NOT an Debit Card. As a Credit Card, any Fees associated with the transaction have to be covered by the store and paid to Visa for transfering the money. If you pay and use a PIN, you are basically using their terminal as a defacto ATM and they don't have as many fees to pay AND if your bank decides to start charging for usage, YOU will be stuck with the fee, just like yoou do when using foreign ATMs (not your bank)

If a kiosk prompts you for a PIN, don't enter it. Hit cancel. Almost all of them will then default to letting you run it as a credit card. Any that don't, the cashier may be able to run it. They default to the PIN entry because it is cheaper for them. I have only hit one place that refused to run it as a credit card and when I reported it to Visa, I got a letter from Visa apologizing as well as from the business. The fact is, if they display a Visa logo, they HAVE to run it as a credit card if you ask them to do so.

I prefer credit cards. If someone were to steal it, I just call the company and tell them, put a dispute on the charges and that's it. I just make sure to pay of the balance in full each month.

Unfortunately that is very true................ from experiencing believe me it is true. In some cases it takes much much much longer...........
