Sound system

Postby one love » December 20th, 2007, 4:34 pm

There are so many of you here who have an awesome amount of knowledge on different subjects. which is a blessing becasue we can get advice from people we trust about almost anything. With that said I pastor a small church which is in a office like building but set up as a church with a pullpit and altar and such. We can sit around 40 or more people. We are not having that many by any means but im planning to work as hard as I can to change many things here. SO we can grow , win souls and hopefully move into a church building one day or get the things in order just in case I am not appointed here later down the road and things will not be so hard on the next guy. I would like to have MIcs on both sides of the pullpit with sound and the ability to record the messages preached through those mics. I am not looking for very expensive best quality. But something that will work I am sure I will be paying for this for the church and I would love to add this. I have a member now that knows some about it, and we are getting more more music as well. I would like to purchase a lot more things and just do things different then before. This is something Im not informed in, as I said one member says he knows what to get but what would yall suggest as far as mics and sound to record. What is it that I will need to buy and what would be the most reasonable priced?

I hope you don't mean this...

It is about the worse solution I can imagine...
• it ties the speaker to one spot
• it picks up every bump and touch of the pulpit
• dual mics are never a good idea...

Get a handheld, wired mic and a boom stand for starters, and when you get a pile of cash, switch to a Countryman style wireless. Honestly, in a small building that seats 40, you don't need amplification -- just the ability to record. Stick with some middle-of-the-road price range from a good brand like Shure (not Nady!) and you'll be okay for what you are trying to do. Price compare at http://www.musiciansfriend.com/microphones

karaoke

Postby pastorables » December 20th, 2007, 5:34 pm

For such a small space, I would recommend what I have. A nice karaoke machine works very well. I'm not talking about the small ones, but the professional ones. Mine is not quite as nice as the one below. I have one that cost around $450.

See:

For around $600, you are in business. I'm not sure that it comes with mics, but they don't have to be the most expensive.

yall are on the right track thank you. Yes I do not need a mic im loud enough for our church  But the recording ability is what I want. The 2 mics on the pulpit no BUt I was thinking of having 2 mics beside it on stands one on the left and one on the right that could be moved anywhere. Keep in mind this is not my point of expertise. Im going to check out these sites.
Buisness we can talk , electronics and sound systems I need help 8.)

Thank you again I as hoing I could spend less then a thousand dollars Im not looking for a high dollar perfect system yet. When we get a nice building I would like to have wireless.

One Love - just want to make certain that you realize this is a "recorder" only and provides no amplification. You wouldn't even be able to hear what you were recording unless you hook it to a sound system or headphones.

Honestly - if I were going to spend that much money - I'd buy a hard disk recorder instead. It's cheaper & gives you 8 tracks to record on. Only problem is that it will take someone somewhat "geeky" to operate it. I've got one similar to this one & it's certainly not like just running a tape recorder & I still have to get the instruction book out on occassion.

If you don't have anyone real "geeky" to operate things & you actually want a sound system - you're easiest setup is something like a Peavey Powered Mixer:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/ ... sku=631373

You still have to hook a tape recorder or CD recorder to it & you still have to buy speakers to go with it - but it's about the easiest setup you can get.
Your biggest challenge if you want good recordings is your microphone. It's hard to find a mircrophone that will pick up someone talking in the setup you were describing. If you use a stand to the side of the pulpit - it's probably going to sound like you're in a barrell or 100 miles away.

If you could spend the money up front to get 1 GOOD wireless microphone - you'd already have 1/2 the battle won.

You've got lots of options depending on what you're needs & future needs might be. Feel free to PM me if you'd like.

budget plays a big part in these kinds of purchases as well. getting the most for your money also depends on what you want the most of. :)

personally, I wouldn't get an all-in-one system. and having a 3-part system might be good (mixer/amp/speakers), but having a 2 part system would probably suit better. but don't get a powered mixer, if you do, get powered speakers.

I prefer Mackie, but there are alternatives (read as cost less).

as for pulpit microphones, I am of the school of thought (sounds like PG is too) that stationary pulpit microphones, even for preachers that stay behind the pulpit all the time, is not the best way. again, budget plays a large role. a countryman/sure combo would be great.

Especially if one of the reasons for the mic is for recording. Just because you are holding/wearing a mic doesnt mean you will be too loud. Make sure you place it or hold real close to your mouth. You can consider a direct line out of your board for recording.

I would recommend writing down what it is exactly you are trying to accomplish. Take that to more than one music store like guitar center, american music etc. Ask them how to accomplish that with your budget which you will already know before going to visit them. Get many different opinions.

When I bought our new system, I had a rep from a couple different stores come to our church, check out the building, accoustics etc and make recommendations off of that. Nothing worse than spending money on stuff you think you need at the time.

Our church bought a Sony RCD-W500C. They range in price from $250 to $300. And they work well to record services. We have several wireless mics including a countryman and believe it or not my very old VHF Audio Technica sounds the best. You could probably pick a couple of cheap wireless mics up for around $100 each. If you EQ them right, nobody will even no the difference.

I've ran sound for some big groups before and without being there, it's hard to tell you what you need. I always like to buy bigger then my needs so that I can expand in the future.

How about Video?

Postby Mister Ed » December 22nd, 2007, 1:43 pm

One Love;

I noticed the unit you referred to will only record sound (CD's) I would think you may, later on, want to record video and make DVD's also. A DVD recorder will record both CD's AND DVD's and you should be able to purchase one for the price range of the one shown.

But for sound only, the hard disk recorder from Pianoman's link looks like an excellent choice. And you could add a DVD recorder later.

Yeah that is awesome. I dont really need the mic to be louder per say right now, I will later though. I would like the capability to record songs and preaching when possible. Also I can not stay behind the pullpit the whole time, it just will not happen  SO cordless does sound good. I would likke ot have both the capabilities to record and have the sound louder just in case I rent a place for a bigger revival or until we get A bigger place. This will be coming out of my pocket not the churches so I still need to get the best deal but if it were the churches money I would be even more cautious, if that makes sense. Im going to go to some places this week and look around, I will post back what I find and maybe you all can help me make the best selection. That would be awesome. Thanks again.
