Alright, so now my Dolphins have netted a Tuna.
Why am I not excited?
1. Bill Parcells is the only guy in football whose mobility has been lateral, not upward. He's been moderately successful as a rebuilder, but notoriously restless as a sustainer. The Dolphins job is one that is almost to the point of being a new expansion team. There remains work to be undone before any real progress will be known. I just don't think Parcells' history supports believing he'll be there long enough to do it.
2. Wayne Huizenga is, perhaps, the worst judge of personnel in the NFL. I wholeheartedly include my now-beloved Nick Saban in that assessment. He was never fit for NFL duty. But, Huizenga also coronated Dave Wannstedt, a perfectly nice guy and perfectly disastrous head coach, and kept him around for a long, long time. If Huizenga had his way a year ago, he'd still be Nick Saban's boss, and he's probably still be close to winless for this season. He hired Cam Cameron, which I thought was a good move. Now, that reality has slapped me back into it, the real reason for the Chargers' success was Marty Schottenheimer, THE ONE MAN I wish someone in Miami would go after with all guns a-blazin' and hire as head coach. I wanted that when Jimmy J. left, and when Marino (pbuh) retired. But, alas, Huizenga has masterfully coordinated the utter destruction of one of the league's most prolific clubs. This is a man who made part of his fortune in selling dumpsters. Well, he's also pretty good at figuring out how to fit things into 'em and has done a fantastic job of putting the Phish deeply into one. I don't see putting any faith in his decisions now simply because its last name is Parcells.
3. Parcells is big on one thing: Parcells. His ego far precedes him. That means the new coach will soon be the former coach and he'll hire in his own image. That wasn't a bad thing in the past (i.e., Bilichek), but it hasn't been a real glorious track record. Parcells' proteges and progeny in coaching have not been barnburners, with the one glaring, Hall-of-Fame exception of Bilichek. Charlie Weis (yeah, right), Romeo Crennel (marginal at best), Tom Coughlin (a mixed bag if ever there was one), Eric Mangini (more a Bilicheck disciple than a Parcells one, and still very very young, but so far not much to mention other than the public man-crush held on him by ESPN's Mike Greenberg).
I wish Huizenga would've just sold the team rather than hire Parcells to try to reclaim it.
