Yeah Jeremy, that is probably what one would call the old way to wire a switch but either way works. I prefer to take the circuit to the switch and then the leg to the light which is opposite of what you have.

Were you by chance at the Hamfest in Huntsville a few months ago? If you were there do you remember the ladies in the red coats giving out information about Huntsville who were seated at the table where all the announcements were made? If so, I was one of those ladies. I thoroughly enjoyed working there and met so many truly wonderful people.

Yep -- I was there. Down at the VBCC. There was a computer show there also, which I heard wasn't any good. But the hamfest was great. I made it by the table there a couple of times, so I probably saw you (but didn't know you.)

You remember seeing me down there?

Yep. You're probably doing what I've seen done most places (other than mine.) Makes more sense to me that way.

To give you a hint as to how old mine is... all connections (other than those I have made/worked on) were made using electrical tape. Pretty easy to tell what I wired in the house, since it has twist-nuts.

Worse yet, whoever renovated the kitchen put in 3-prong grounded outlets, but the ground doesn't go anywhere. (Pretty sure it's against code to do it that way -- the ones I have replaced in the house were 2-prong, and I replaced them with 2-prong.)

I'd like to have it all re-wired, but I hate to think about how much that's going to set me back... :)

From what I can see in your picture you look familiar. I hope your visit to Huntsville was pleasant. I work part time with the Convention and Visitor Center of Huntsville. We were there to give information about Huntsville, provide directions to various sites, and just help make your visit to our city as enjoyable as possible. It was a truly enjoyable assignment because all the people there were so very nice. Y'all do a great work with emergency situations. I heard amazing stories about the help provided during huricane Katrina. Great folks, those Ham Operators! Glad I got to meet so many of you. Hope you all come back again to Huntsville!

Actually, I was down there twice over the summer. Once for vacation near the end of June (was a free vacation we got when we bought the house, and I didn't want to go to Gatlinburg since I've been there a zillion times -- only really been to Huntsville for the hamfest and decided I wanted go to spend a few days there.) We made it by the Space Center, Redstone (evidently Huntsville police gets suspicious when you take pictures right outside the base..lol), and a few other places. (Actually, there's a long story behind Redstone as to why I wanted a picture -- anyone here who has known me from high school knows what I am talking about.) Then I came back in August for the hamfest (didn't stay overnight, though.)

Ever heard of Digium? We made it by there. They make the Asterisk VoIP PBX and a lot of the hardware we use at work. Great bunch of guys.

Speaking of which, here are a couple of pictures of me. First, the aforementioned Redstone picture: (Not sure which entrance/road this is, but you may know... we were coming from the Space Center, whatever highway it is next to that, got off on the wrong exit or something and ended up here...wasn't very far a drive. Had to take the opportunity while I was there... and had to leave quickly because of an approaching storm.)

And then, one of me and my wife at Digium:

Might give you a better view. My avatar is a picture of me at the radio station here in town, where I do some part-time work. :)

If I ever get bored of Cleveland, Huntsville would probably be where I'd move. :)

Speaking of storms.... what's the deal down there? EVERY AFTERNOON we had a major storm. :) Weirdest one was the lightning 20+ miles off (storm had passed) and we were the only two out in the pool at the hotel... obviously fairly safe distance, but still, was weird floating in the water at night watching the lightning in the distance.

(Yes, I live dangerously.)

Oh yeah, security if very tight here. I worked a conference a few months ago where you had to have a badge to get in, then go through a metal dectector, and after that the police dogs sniffed you if you had any kind of bag. We had to have a government issued picture ID before giving each person their badge to get in.

Huntsville is made up of high tech companies. It seems that there's only two kinds of jobs here. The high tech ones and the service ones. Engineers are a dime a dozen here. Rocket scientists in abundance. We are now becoming involved in medical research.

Funny you should say that! I just told someone recently that if I didn't have heart strings (two little granddaughters) here I would consider moving to Cleveland. I was in Cleveland this past weekend. Went to church at Keith Street COGOP on Sunday.

Maybe all the nerds here just don't know how to live dangerously!

I'm glad your visit was enjoyable. If you decide to come here again, go by the visitor center on Church Street. The ladies there can give you lots of information about Huntsville and the things to do and see. You can also get discounts there on many of the attractions. Oh, and if you attend another function here and see ladies in red vests or jackets come up and introduce yourself.

Yes Jeremy that ground and 3 prong outlet deal you described is against code. Don't feel to bad I have ran across hundreds of homes that used tape instead of wire nuts. That's what tape was for back then. Usually a rewire is not worth the money. It's better to run a few new 3 wire circuits if you need them than to rewire everything.
