June Jones hired at SMU

Postby EagerBeaver » January 7th, 2008, 8:58 am

ESPN reporting that Jones will take the SMU job after all.

I wonder if Jones was simply unhappy with the athletic budget and the people above him, or if he knew Hawaii was going to go to hell in a handbasket after this year.

For the record, what Hawaii is will go through in the football program will NEVER compare to the agony or awefullness of HELL.

My thoughts, FWIW:

1. June Jones is not the spring chicken he once was. $1.5 plus per year, or however much they'll pay him at SMU, will double up what he made at UH. Think what you will, but who of us wouldn't jump to a new employer for 2x the pay?

2. SMU, for those old enough to remember, was once a football machine in this country. Two words: Pony Express -- Eric Dickerson & Craig James. I remember when they played Dan Marino and the Pitt Panthers in 1982 in the Cotton Bowl (back when that bowl still mattered, unforutnately no longer the case). They were undefeated, but the Penn State Nittany Lions won the AP National Championship (after beating UGA and Herschel Walker in the Sugar Bowl, which I also remember watching). SMU is the only D1A team to get the death penalty and it served its purpose ---- the NCAA saw to it that this program would never rise again. And, it hasn't. I think June Jones would like part of his legacy to be beating those odds there for a lot of money.

3. SMU has two things UH won't: Money and more money. Dallas people love SMU. Dallas has lots and lots of money. Lots.

Twice the pay with a major cut in cost of living expenses.

Don't blame him at all. Huge payraise, plus dim prospects for next year at Hawaii. I'd do the same thing.

I remember when that happened and I wonder why some other programs have not received that [death penalty]?

I was impressed at how June Jones handled this. He first resigned from UH before excepting the job at SMU. I hope he can restore some of the pride of the Mustangs.

Woe, I tried researching it yesterday while at work. But it was blocked.. Thanks for the direct links. I was able to access them when I got home.

Wow, that's just wild.. I was reading that one guy compared it to the dropping of the atomic bomb in Japan. Now, they do whatever they can to prevent it from being done again. It must have been very devistating...

From footballrumormill website:

"Texas assistant coach Duane Akina is among the early candidates for the vacant Hawaii job, three people close to the situation said Monday. The job became available after June Jones accepted the SMU job. Before his resignation, Jones reportedly recommended five possible candidates to replace him: Akina, Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow, New York Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride, San Jose State coach Dick Tomey and Hawaii linebackers coach Cal Lee. As of late Monday, Texas had not been contacted by Hawaii for permission to speak with Akina. – Houston Chronicle"

2 names on that list are really good names that I know about: Chow and Gilbride. Tomey and Akina I am less familiar with, but Tomey has UH connections. Maybe Akina does, too, I dunno. If the Jaguars OC, as another story reports, is a candidate, would Mike Shula follow him to UH????? And, in what role????

Athletic Director is fired for not re-signing June Jones.

HONOLULU (AP) -- The University of Hawaii fired athletics director Herman Frazier on Tuesday after he failed to re-sign football coach June Jones.

In a brief statement, the university said the move was made "in the best interest of the athletics program." It came a day after Jones, the winningest coach in school history, accepted a five-year deal worth about $2 million a year to coach at SMU.

Losing your star QB to graduation, your head coach to another school and now the A.D all in the same year? That could be a huge uphill battle to not only recruiting, but also to keep the program at the top of the conference.
