Because I didn't understand what you were asking.
Let me ask it differently. Do you have to win the SEC championship to be national champion in basketball? baseball? volleyball? tennis?
You don't have to answer. The answer is no. You have to be ranked high enough to be invited to the tournament.
No you don't have to win now, you use to, and you have to have a good enough record in conference and have a high RPI to get an at-large bid for the NCAA in just about all of those sports.
So, why would it be any different for football?
Well let's see football only has 12 games, basketall has 30+ baseball 40+ not sure about volleyball and tennis. Plus the way football is regulated is a lot different than those other sports. If you don't win the conference championship game you don't qualify for the NC game. If you lose one game in football in a normal year you're out of the running for the NC. You can lose 4-5 in basketball and still win the NC. Same in all of those other sports.
My point with UGA, while I readily agree they were playing the best of just about anybody in the country at the end of the season, they did not win their division or their conference. Just can't see how a team can play for NC when they don't do that. One step further I think UT should have received the Sugar Bowl invite instead of UGA having played in the SEC Championship game, that's my opinion.
If I were to read, much less answer, all the attacks made on me, this shop might as well be closed for business. I do the very best I know how, the very best I can, and I mean to keep doing so until the end. If the end brings me out right, what is said against me won't amount to anything. If the end brings me out wrong, ten angels swearing I was right will make no difference." -Abraham Lincoln
