Winter is Finally Over!

Postby Paully_44 » February 20th, 2008, 8:51 am

I so look forward to this time of year. The boys of summer are finally getting back in the swing (pun intended) of things. I know many are here are not too interesting in baseball, but that is ok. I love it anyway and cant wait for games to start up again.

Baseball practice starts for my youngest in less than a month and that is icing on the baseball cake.

What's this "winter" that you speak of? ;)

Paully, I am one that you speak of. I am so sick of McNamee and Clements that I could scream. I use to be one of the biggest fans of America's past-time, but the game is so tainted and Selig seems to do nothing about it.

Bring back the days of Hammerin' Hank, Pete Rose, Brooks Robinson, Willie Stargell, Roberto Clemente, Tom Seaver, the Big Red Machine, Rollie Fingers, Catfish Hunter, R-E-G-G-I-E, or even the likes of Cal Ripken, Jr. then I may return to the game.

Until then this time of the year is reserved for golf!

My hero's. My first big league game, the Seattle Mariners played the Boston Red Sox and big Jim Rice hit a homerun. Those were the days. I am not happy with the way Selig runs baseball, but I still love the game itself.

Oh Paully, you talking about a grave injustice, Jim Rice not in the Hall are you kidding me. And the reason I keep hearing is because in the latter stages of his career he was considered a DH instead of the tremendous outfielder he was.

The latest I'm hearing now is they are trying to link A-Rod to HGH and steriods. The next person they try to link to HGH and steroids will be Freddie Patek.

To me, the Hall of Fame is just a museum. I would love to visit it someday. But I dont agree with the way players are chosen to be inducted. Who votes?? Sports writers, media make up the majority. Most of whom have never played the game.

To me, one of the worst things coming out of the steroid scandal is that Jose Canseco is being validated.

I am somewhat excited for the Mariners this year. Won 89 games last year, and I think we bolstered our pitching staff a bit. Erik Bedard is gonna lead the AL in strikeouts again, Carlos Silva was decent in Minny. I also like the addition of Brad Wilkerson. Let's see us win 90 this year.

I'm no fan, but I'll tell you what I love about baseball that makes it special to me. Turning on the radio or the TV and hearing it on, that's it. Just knowing it's there. I like it. I like the buzz of lawnmowers and smell of cut grass and sweltering heat that comes with the sound of the droning voices of the radio guys that call the games. I can't watch it for long on TV, or listen to it on the radio. I'd rather hear about it than hear it. The numbers are fascinating and complex, and that people make a living crunching so many of them for a sport is a hoot. But, God bless America, baseball is our sport, and summer is our season, and the two together make summer in America special, unique even. And, although I won't watch 5 hours of it before the World Series this year, I'm glad we've got it. Any game that you can play in the middle of the day in the middle of the week, and STILL pay guys tens of millions of dollars, you have to admit is spectacularly American.

I'm looking forward to the Alabama Crimson Tide baseball team improving this year after not making it to the CWS last year. The catcher we've got is supposed to be a hoss, and we've got a new assistant who was a former player in the mid-1990's when we had some of our hottest teams.

Oh that the Braves will have a revival of their old self of the 90's where they dominated.

Chipper, Texie, Francour, now Glavine is back, Smoltz is around 400 but still there. We might actually do something.
