I did NOT know that

Postby dolfan » March 10th, 2008, 5:30 am

I learned 2 things this weekend about Bama's basketball coach that I didn't know before. Trivia tidbits for a team that has nothing else to do.

1. Bama coach Mark Gottfried's uncle is ESPN's Mike Gottfried. I wish his name was Gottfired -- as in no-longer-the-coach-at-Alabama-cuz-I-got-fired.

2. Mark Gottfried's first cousin is former NFL QB and now Stanford head coach Jim Harbaugh. Two good German names, one good American coach (hint --- it ain't Gottfried.)

dolfan,

My son and I were walking thru University Mall in Tuscaloosa at Christmas time and I noticed this guy standing in the middle of the hallway all by himself. It was Gottfried. No one was paying any attention to him. He looked like he was waiting for his wife to come out of a clothing store. I thought, only in Bamaland, can the Bball coach of a major University be completely ignored. Nick Saban walks in the place and the whole mall would have swarmed to where he was.

I kind of felt sorry for the guy because no one was making any effort to acknowledge him or shake his hand or ask for an autograph. For the most part he was probably glad, but it must have got his ego somewhat that he was being completely ignored. Just another mall hubby waiting on his wife.

I almost went back and spoke to him, but being a Mountaineer fan and being in a hurry at the same time I didn't want to waste the extra steps to walk back.

His program has taken a hit with alot of injuries. However, I am surprised he has held onto his job as long as he has. Will one more year prove anything? Most talented coaches prove their worth in lean, difficult times.

I had an almost identical thing happen a few years back in Mississippi, only the coach was Rick Stansbury from MSU. No fanfare for him either. :D
