There is , to be sure, some times when "superhuman" strength is in effect. This is far from the norm IF the situation is handled properly from the outset.

It depends on the method of approach. I have been in all kinds of these situations. When that "superhuman" thing starts I just have everyone back off and let them wear themselves out. Nothing in the bible speaks of having to restrain them......I just let them do what they want to do....remove everyone from their presence....You would be amazed at how quickly that will end when there is no audience.

I am not going to wrestle with a 127 lb. woman or man or child. I let them wrestle with themselves. They quit soon. Then you just talk calmly and pray effectively. As I said, I have done it all and seen it all....and I submit that it does not have to be a wrestling match.....even though they want it to become that.

And dajudge.....it should not have been scarry at all.

Dr ron with all due respect I dont feel anyone "has seen it all" relative to demon possession. It can be very different in every occasion and it depends on how many demons are in the person. I respect anyones experience but nobody has seen close to it all when it comes to this subject IMHO
Please don't read anything into this line of questioning, and I hope I don't offend anyone,...but I am interested in your thoughts without labeling.
Do any of you think that there is any relation to some situations that we might call 'mental retardation' and those that might be possesed by demonic spirits?
The reason I ask is that some of the behavioral charecteristics can be similar.
Joey,
It sounds like you haven't ever been around anyone that is truley possessed, the reason i say this is because there is no "similar"charecteristics in a demon possessed person and someone that is mentally retarded....

Thanks for the spelling correction.....and you are right.

Joey, there are sometime many similarities. A good many people who are "mentally retarded" have been and are "diagnosed" with demonic possession. The converse is also true.

While this is not always the case, it does happen and is possible.

I have seen it both ways over the 40 + years I have dealt with these issues.

I think often there are those that want to see demons everywhere, and blame real medical issues on perceived "demons". Also many times plain addictions and poor choices are blamed on satan when it's us making those choices and putting bondages on ourselves.

But there are real instances of possession, and many times we are not even aware of what's going on in a person's life because we don't take the time to care. From my limited experience with this, there are usually deeper problems than just the demon, and the root of them are always a lack of Christ in the person's life. As in all things, if we seek Christ, everything else is secondary. In working with someone who may be in this situation the most important thing is to point to Christ, not point out satan, he gets too much credit already.

Question: When did Jesus ever wrestle with a demon possessed person?

Just because that is what many ministers do doesn't mean that is our Biblical example. I read where demons stripped people naked, threw them out of houses, and killed folks. Knowing that I choose not to engage them physically, I'll keep in on a Biblical level.

I remember two instances, both in my adult life, where I was actually involved. There was a couple of Georgia youth camp experiences too...but we were sent out and the staff handled it.

The adult experiences were unique and totally different from each other. One was a man who was twice my size. He came up for prayer and the demonic presence showed itself....several were speaking in tongues and I was face to face with him speaking to the demonic presence....it actually spoke back. The man was frothing at the mouth and I didn't understand what was said...then the pastor called me away and called the entire church to worship and prayer....at that moment the presence left and the man was delivered.

Another was a woman that I was praying with in an evangelistic service...she started tryng to dance with me in a vulgar way as I was praying with her...I stepped back immediately and spoke to the presence....she fell on the floor and started wrything around like a snake. She wasn't delivered....she just got up and left!

Like Dr. Ron said...there's no set pattern....but I try to deal with the person calmly and know that a demonic presence can not tolerate the true sincere worship and presence of the Lord....either the person or the spirit has to leave.

Jesus also turned water into wine healed the blind do we have that type of faith/power you don't know what you would do until you are faced with a situation. I just know what i have been through and what it took for delieverence and i am glad that Brother Caldwell had the faith/power to continue to pray and i was delivered from 3 demons.

I guess this is more on the lines of how I have thought of this issue. again though, and honestly, I have not really seen any "possessions", though.

Please don't take it the wrong way, many here would have handled the situation differently that that pastor did, does that mean he was wrong or ineffective, NO! look at the results, but that also doesn't mean that it was the only way it could have been handled. Every pastor/minister has their own preferences in the way they deal with things, and also the direction God leads them may be different. Remember even though Christ healed many blind men, he didn't seem to do it the same way twice, method is less important that allowing God to lead.

Figgie, I am not denying your deliverance but I am saying that physical strength did not deliver you. I don't care if he body slammed you; if it makes you happy fine. The point and the fact is that it was nothing but faith in Christ that delivered you. He could have said a magic word, ran up and down the aisles, poured oil on your head, etc. but it was the voice of the Lord that set you free just as it was the voice of the Lord that freed all in the NT.

Yes Jesus walked on water and turned water into wine. Physical strength will not accomplish those things either but IF the Lord wills any of us could see those miracles take place. FAITH is the only answer.

Full Quiver: I never said it was physical power that delivered me i know what delivered me if you misunderstood what i was saying sorry, I know it was allll the saints of God there that night praying for me and i know it was the power of God i have been associated with the cogop/cog for 53 years so i do know about the power of God and what it takes to be delivered of our sins. I also know about the hypocrites that are assoicated with these orgainizations. I would have never asked this question if i knew it was going to bring such "sarcasm" but now that i know i will try to refrain from asking any questions. and by the way it is figilife
