COGOP name change

Some have said that the simple name Church of God is already taken...however, legally, if we had headquarters in another city or state...we could just be the Church of God, City, State....for example there is the denomination Church of God, Anderson, IN.

We could be the Church of God, Atlanta, GA or where ever.

Correct. The name Church of God and it's equivalents are not and cannot exclusively be the property of any specific religious sect. That is what the panel of judges stated in the legal conclusions when COG and TCOG faced legality issues over the similar names and essentially the same location.

Yes Daniel, any prefix or suffix ie location added to the name CoG would do AS long AS another group is not using said prefix or suffix. CoG is generic and therefore must be ammended in some way to make it unique.

I don't have a problem with the name at all. I really can't see a lot of people rushing to a church because it is named .......... It is the people not the name, that make a differ. History if poor can be overcome, we may have all had relatives hung for stealing horses in our past. I might add very few changed their name for it. I voted against a change.

International Churches of God

These guys & these guys might throw a fit about that.
Of course I'm sure they would welcome CoGoP to unite with them.

Yes, I saw these two groups. Thus, the name "International Churches of God" which is legally not the same as these two and they would not have a leg to stand on in a court of law. Proof of this was with COG and TCOG.

A much simpler solution would be for COGOP to just join with COG and be called COG. (if they would have you)
Since COGOP has changed it's doctrine, it seems to be the same as COG. Why have two groups?
From what I read on Accerelate, they have basically the same form of government. COG Cleveland owns all properties
and dictates to the locals and everyone falls in line. Same in COGOP for the most part.
IMHO, this makes more sense that all this name change talk.

And as a former member of the Church of God, Cleveland (and my parents are former members of the Church of God, Anderson, it gets really confusing, most of the time the Anderson church uses "First Church of God" as their church name, because it designates them somewhat from the CoG.

I guess, I don't see a need to change the organization name, though. How bout - Queen of Queens, or The Queen Church, or We are the Champions (oh, wait...):

LOL, if that's FOTW marker, and it should happen to come to general internet attention (who knows how that could happen), we could see a whole new kind of pilgrim showing up there.

Cool beans. I was there a few years back nad didn't catch it. Although there were a lot of teens in my group and maybe we were steered clear . . . for obvious reasons.

As an old CPMA State Secretary, my memory seems to recall that the marker is one of two markers erected during the tenure of Wade Phillips (CPMA General Secretary). Sets on the left side of the road leading up to the All Nations Cross. Both very exclusive and traditional in content. I also remember conversations in the CPMA State Secretaries banquets about rebuilding a replica of the Bryant cabin inside the park near the "Arise, shine" Marker and even the thought of purchasing property across the road from the entrance to build a Hotel in the shape of "Noah's Ark" (no kidding).

Rev Rick, you are looking at it backwards.

Changing the name for changing the names sake is not the reason. Changing to something new to attract people is not reason. I agree people for the most part will not come to a church just because of the name. BUT..

We know that there have been people NOT COME to our church just because of the name. That is well known.

We need to change the name not to attract people but to stop scaring (did not like that word but could not think of something that means that) people away because of our name.
