There was another marker in the same area called "The One Shepherd/One Fold Marker." I might be confusing all these markers together, but I believe they were erected at the beginning of Wade's first years in Cleveland. About the same time he wrote his, "Mysterious Babylon and the Great Church of God" book. Definitely a "churchy" period for a lot of folks.

We need to change the name not to attract people but to stop scaring (did not like that word but could not think of something that means that) people away because of our name.

Ahh I have been wondering why peoples post kept doing that.

I dont see the merger of "COG" and "COGOP" happening. For various reasons but I just dont think it will happen. If "COGOP" has increased by so many members should they be doing much better?
Im not sure what name you would want to truly reflect the organization because im not sure we know what the organization as a whole really believes. I think there is still a transitional period going on and there are now so many ideas.


Just curious when did WP become such a bad person, I know he was the "MAN" before and really was not happy with those who did not want change. I do know he has seemed to go back to the old way some but Im wondering when did this start? He had much pull, Only one other had more.

why not just "churches of God" why cant that be used.........???????

I was referring to the ark part.

However... do you really think that a hotel would fly out in the middle of nowhere North Carolina? IMHO it would be another high price COGOP debacle that the International Offices would have to bail out, e.g. the chain of White Wing stores that failed.

OK, here's my two cents.

I believe the only way to "save" the cogop organization would be to make a totally public announcement to "denounce" some of our cultish beliefs from the past, to publically acknowledge that we have divided the Bible incorrectly, resulting in a mass exodus of some of the greatest preachers, teachers, talents and members I have known (sometimes even against their wishes) and as a good faith gesture, change the name of the organization (it would be worth the cost of new letterheads) AND the HQ location as a public display that we really have moved on.

Only then, will those former cogopers and sceptics of our organization believe that we are different.

I voted other the reason being is I have read this post and have a few questions. I would agree that we (COGOP) could stand a name change, however, only changing our name would it really change us (COGOP)? Meaning would it make us more relevant to our communities and cities where we are? I mean look we changed our stand on the rings, now marriage but are we really any more relevant than we were before?

In my opinion (not sure how humble it is) there is still a non-repentant attitude that is among us that we failed to heed since 1984. Simply changing our name with out changing our attitude will be like that guy who wanted to change his name at the court house. The clerk asked him his name and he said George Stinks, the clerk said, well I can see why you would want to change your name, what would you like to change it to. The gentleman look at her and said Joe.

As far as the name change, let's be honest, most of our problem is with the words, "of Prophecy" in our name. We think it sounds - 1) old fashioned; 2) cultish; 3) like a "snake-handlin" church; 4) comparable to a Texas polygamist group; 5) you have to tell people how to spell P-R-O-P-H-E-C-Y when you do any kind of business transactions.

If we would have won the label "Church of God" we would be less inclined to change (although I have heard some COG folks complain that their name has been a detraction in some areas).

Several local churches have gone to using a different name in large print with affiliation signs so small you can't read 'em from very far away. We take it a step further and only list our local name, no affiliation sign. We don't hide it, we just give people an opportunity not to pre-judge us because of a denomination.
