Commitment and Country

Postby Rob » July 15th, 2008, 3:35 am

This past weekend Kenny Perry from Franklin, KY won the John Deere Classic in golf. It was his 3rd win of the season, and no doubt a place on the US Ryder Cup team. The Ryder Cup this year will be held in L'ville, KY.

Now he is being dogged by the media because this week he is not going across the pond to play in the British Open or other wise known as the Open Championship. At the beginning of the year Kenny wrote down his one goal for this years golf season. To make the Ryder Cup team. At that time he was 100+ in the world.

Yes he is having a career year with 3 wins, second on the money list and in the Fed Ex points. However, when he made his schedule out for the year no one was even considering him to play in the 3rd major of the year. Now that he is as hot a player there is on the tour he is being given down the road because he is honoring, yes I said honoring his commitments that he made at the beginning of the season.

Several years ago when he was trying to make the tour one final time, a friend of his in Franklin gave him 50,000 dollars in a last ditch effort to make the tour. The only thing that Kenny had to promise this man was he would donate 5% of his earnings each year to Liscomb College in Nashville, TN. 20 some years later and 25 million dollars later, Kenny continues to honor that commitment that was made by a simple handshake.

In a world that no longer honors a lot of it's commitments it's nice to see a pro athlete continue to honor his.

Kenny let them say what they will, go win in Milwaukee this week and show them at the Ryder Cup what you are made of.

Okay, I'm a fan now. Never heard of him before, but now I'm a fan.

Kenny Perry is awesome. He's a good family man, honors his committments and plays great golf. He's got a little hitchy kind of swing, but he's smooth and consistent with it. I know he's getting criticized for skipping the British Open...errr The Open Championship...but I say thumbs up to the guy.

Besides, "The Open" is played on brown rolling goat fields in wind and drizzle. That may be 'real' golf or the birthplace of golf, but the red coats can have it. I'll take Augusta, Pinehurst, Sawgrass, Pebble Beach, etc.

Fezzik do you play golf? Have you been to Scotland to play? I know what you see on TV and TV does not do those courses justice. Believe I've played over there. It is the birthplace of golf and for a reason. It is very challenging golf, while it may not have the natural beauty of Augusta, which I think it a beautiful golf course, The Open Championship is a great challenge of golf.

I do play golf, but I've never been able to afford a trip across the pond to play. I do hope to visit one day, so maybe my mind will be changed by seeing it in person. But, for now I'll stick to playing courses with green grass, trees and water hazards. I like being able to shape a shot, not have to play a worm burner on purpose to skip the ball 200 yards on to the green.

I felt the same way about those courses across the pond till I played them and the elements. After that I have a whole new appreciation for those guys that play on tour. As the commerical say's, "these guys are good."
