Questions for IPOD users

Postby TC » August 26th, 2008, 1:09 pm

OK I love music and have a ton of CD's I have a few Mp3 Players but I don't not have any apple stuff. My Cousin has really been pushing me telling me I need the Ipod video 160 gig. I hate apple because they try to take over everything you have that is why I have never gotten an Ipod.

OK what are you guys thoughts on Ipod vs other Mp3 players?

At one time I was told once you put your own CD's on there you were limited on how many times you can burn to another CD, is that true?

If I got the video, can you record tv programs and watch on Ipod? If so does it take alot of extra stuff to do it?

Can you back up an Ipod on just a reg HD in your computer? or an External HD?

Over all what are your thought about Apple, Ipods....pros and cons? LASTLY if I were to get one where is the best place to get? I was told if you ordered on line then if there was a problem you were stuck but if got at an Apple store or local it would be no hassle

thanks

Mac people

Postby Pastor Gary » August 26th, 2008, 1:32 pm

The whole Mac vs Windows thing is sometimes as stupid as the Phillips vs Standard screwdriver wars.

I am a long-time Mac user. My entire household is Mac, iPod, iPhone, AirPort friendly. My CHURCH is 90% Mac people. (Hallelujah!)

It is my preference. The argument you make, "...because they try to take over everything you have..." can be reversed: Apple products work so well, and are so problem-free because of the tight integration between product design, equipment manufacture, and tight OS control. But I realize some people prefer to piece together components and software from many sources and make them work together. Sort of.

I'll leave the specific answers to the "can you..." questions to one of the more astute Mac-heads here, but, for me, if I were shopping for an iPod and lived near an Apple Store, I would stop in, touch and feel, compare models, ask lots of questions from the Mac geeks in Apple T-Shirts, and buy it there.
"God is excited to show you mercy. He rises to give you His compassion." (Isaiah 30:18)

"For surely, O LORD, you bless the righteous;
you surround them with your favor as with a shield." (Psalm 5:12)

I have an iPod and really like it. A couple friends have a Zune and that is really cool too. Probably will be my next mp3 player if I dont break down and by an iPhone (in my dreams).

To me, it all comes down to preference. What do you want. I'd suggest going to an electronics store and play with a few.

My son has an 80 GB IPod Classic and the other day I let him download Stargate Atlantis: Season 2. He got the entire season with plenty of memory left, cost less than DVDs in the store, and he can watch it wherever he goes. He has The Bourne Supremacy on there as well. I think movies are around $9.99 each with unlimited use.

My wife has a iPod Nano and I have a cheap Insigna MP3 player. I like the Nano, but there are two complaints that I have on the Nano. One is you can only sync the iPod with one computer. If you want to add one song from another computer, you can't just add it there is an extra step of putting it on the computer you have synced with the iPod. This also prevents you from saving song on your iPod and erasing it from your computer. You have to leave the song on your computer if you want to keep it on your iPod. It will erase the song from your computer, the next time you sync the iPod with the computer.

My next complaint is minor, but there is no radio on the iPod. You can buy a device that adds radio to the iPod, but that is an extra device. I listen to the radio more with my MP3 player than I listen to music. I just listen to a lot of talk radio and during the commercials I listen to music.

The iPod Touch is sweet and has wifi abilities like the iPhone. The only limiting factor is capacity/price vs the other ipods.

You asked Ipod vs other MP3 players.

I have not owned an Ipod personally. My granddaughter has a Ipod nano. She likes it. But shortly after getting it she did complain about the single pc limitation that Molej spoke of. She found out the hardway. She synced up her nano on dads computer and went to get a some music off moms computer and lost all her original songs.

I have had a couple of Non IPOD MP3 players. It plays music when I want it to. They have functioned just like a flash drive. Plug it up to computer on USB port . Showes up as a Drive. Copy MP3 to it . Create folders/albums etc .

If you want the Sync feature like Itunes has to offer there are lots of downloadable packages to do this.

We purchased one Sunday for my Grandson Bday. 9 years old. Purchased it a Belks. Less than $20 after discounts. MSRP is $80.
It is a video MP3/MP4 player. He brought it over to my house yesterday. I have a WIN/TV board in computer . I recorded several of his favorited Zach and Cody tv shows in WMV files.

His player came with a conversion package that converted the fairly large WMV files down to AMV files. When he left he had 3 30 min tv shows , about 60 family pics and aobut 10 cds of music on the player. Enough to keep him busy for a while. LOL.

Its like Pastor Gary said. Apple vs PC.. Over/Under IPOD/MP3 players. It is a personal decision.

What gets me is that I have two laptops and two Home Pc's I am not wanting to be limited to one pc.

Also I added the Ipod software a week ago and every time I turn on my PC I am getting 5 or 6 things telling me that apple needs to add this or that and do I want to upgrade to this and do I want to open to Ipod store.

I don't think I would ever DL from I tunes. I have most what I want on CD. I want to copy them over to my computer (HD) and then put all my CD's up on ebay or something. I have a ton of Unopened music. I had a good friend that was the Music manager at a local store and he would get me copies of new stuff at HIS prices (prices ranged from 5-13 bucks when the were 15+ reg price)

I was unsure about the CD thing when they came out so if I really liked a cd I bought a few copied incase I wore them out. I found I have 6 copies of Mylyon Lefevre and BH, Sheeps that are unopened.

The single computer thing is my only complaint...When I got my ipod I loaded my music on my home pc but spend most of my time in the office. My friend also learned the hard way when trying to sync to another pc.

Is it possible to save your downloads to a disc and then download them to another computer and sync with that one?

I think you can burn your downloads to a disc and then put them on another computer to sync with. You can with MP3, but unsure if iTunes puts restrictions on music. I think you can burn those to CD also.

There maybe some software out there that allows you around the one computer syncing rule.

if you buy your music off of iTunes, it can be regisitered on up to 5 computers. When you connect your iPod to a new computer and attempt to play a song you purchased from another PC, you will be promted to register that computer to play the song. That is where my problem comes in. I was buying songs and wanting to play them at church. No internet connection there so I couldnt register the computer to play the song in iTunes. I end up disconnecting my iPod fom the church PC, plug in my iPod directly to the sound board and can play that way.

if you go with iPod, there is a free software called Yamipod. It can take you music off of your iPod. I use it frequently
