Does anyone remember Leonard's Losers?

Postby pastorables » October 7th, 2008, 7:03 pm

As a child, I remember listening to Leonard's Losers every weekend on our way to watch Ole Miss. The creative prognostics of Leonard were truly fun to consider.

Does anyone remember the era of Leonard's Losers? I found this article on the web.

And now "Leonard Postosties" is also dead - July 23, 2001.

If you were a follower of college (and professional) football prognostication, you know who I mean. For he was Leonard "Postosties" Postero, of Athens, Ga., well-known in football circles around the nation, and with servicemen around the world, for his syndicated radio and newspaper predictions about upcoming football games. He didn't predict winners; he predicted losers, and hence the name, "Leonard's Losers."

A happy, smiling and garrulous Italian, Leonard cut quite a figure around Athens, as he easily moved in the inner circle of the athletic world with his back-slapping, outgoing manner. Listeners will remember his somewhat gravely voice, and clipped writing which gave the various football teams around the nation synonyms for their nicknames.

"Tuscaloosa Pachyderms," he called the Crimson Tide of University of Alabama. "Oinkers" was his name for the Hogs of the University of Arkansas, or "Swamp Lizards" for the Gators at Florida. He wasn't against poking fun at the college team in his own home town, with his "Red Clay Hounds" name for the University of Georgia Bulldogs. You had to have a sharp ear to listen to Leonard's rapid-fire loser delivery.

Leonard Postero, you gave lots of people a smile with your hobby that turned into a business. May you rest in peace.

Yes, I remember and loved listening to him.

I wondered what happened to him, figured he'd just gotten too old and unhealthy. I suppose that's the epitome of understatement for about 7 years now, huh? Leonard's Losers .... Auburn Tigers.

(Sorry, just had to take that opportunity after Tony Franklin got fired.)
