Here's more about the previous Superman attempts:

Superman's birth parents alive and well on a Krypton that never exploded.
A living symbiotic Superman suit.
A Kryptonian Luthor working for the CIA and fronting an invasion from Krypton.
A gay Jimmy Olsen mocked by an apparently homophobic Perry White.
The whole thing ending with Superman dying, Jor El sensing his death and committing suicide so he can go to heaven and convince Superman to live again so he can fly to Krypton and save it.
Oh, and at one point Justin Timberlake was offered the role of Superman

Burton hated the flying FX in the 1978 film, too, so he didn’t want Superman to fly. Instead, he put Superman in a Supermobile. (Seven years later, AICN revealed that Burton and Peters had also planned on having Superman teleport from place to place in lieu of flying.)
---
But the most controversial thing Burton did was brag to a radio news service in Texas during an interview that he intended to play up "Superman’s darker, more murderous side" and that he hoped Cage was up to the task of portraying that aspect of Superman.

The final issue of the Batman RIP story is out tomorrow and it appears that Bruce Wayne does indeed retire after "being shaken by a secret from his past" (that his father was actually a bad guy, I think). Rumors are that Dick Grayson will take up the mantle of Batman.

Bruce's retirement will be followed by this "Battle for the Cowl" series with all the Batman supporting cast trying to become the new Batman but all bets are that Dick Grayson will be it, since he's the only one who has a good enough name to carry it off. I predict Bruce will return in the future, maybe more quickly than that if the books tank.

I hate these phony grabs for media attention. It's like the "Death of Superman" all over again.

To add something to this, in Action Comics 871 which is part 4 of the New Krypton arc they're doing with Superman a character who I believe is Kryptonian appears at the end calling himself Nightwing. I've read that there will be further storylines in the Superman comics involving this new Nightwing.

It's possible. With the death of Pa Kent, and if Lois Lane should happen to not survive Final Crisis I could see them taking him from earth for a while.

Now they are reporting Bruce Wayne died in the end of this story but it was an explosion and there was no body recovered, so him staying dead is as likely as ...well, uh, it's just not likely.

Aren't they saying that it was Thomas Wayne (Bruce's thought-deceased dad) who killed him?

If so, that is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

Edited to correct my brain flatulence in calling Bruce's dad Thomas "Kent".

It is ridiculous. I hate it when they give a writer the keys to the kingdom and just let them root around in that world, destroying whatever they like (i.e. Frank Miller post Dark Knight Returns). Then in about 2-3 years, someone else will come back and repair the damage.

The guy behind the whole plot to kill Batman claimed he was, but like whether Bruce Wayne physically died or not, there was no definitive answer.

So how did this shake out?

This is the main reason I stopped reading the comics as they went into interpersonal relationships waaaay to much and stopped focusing on the action, thrills and adventure. To kill off an iconic comic character like Batman is really just lame. Terrible writers as Dewayne stated so well take years to repair.

I found extreme satisfaction in reading comics as a kid and with the recent interest of my young son.. it has rekindled that old passion.. but for only good written stories. I literally scan the book before I allow him to purchase. I've also found the "marvel adventure series" for kids and all ages to be more true to the old comics. Beginning and Ending.

We are also really enjoying the Mini Marvels. Laugh outloud kinda stuff.
Sorry to highjack.

EDIT-Okay, I can think of a way it could work and I'd be okay with it. What if Bruce decides he's had enough of a crime fighting career and hands the mantle down to Dick Grayson, who for all intents and purposes is Batman-in-training anyway. Bruce marries and decides to live the billionaire life for a few years until he's pulled back in with the murder of his new wife (ala Death Wish). Temporary retirement is ok. Death isn't.

That could work. Killing him will not. Hopefully this is the way they go if this is what is happening.

When I was a kid I was really into the old school Superman stories. There was a story line where Superman and Jimmy Olson went to the bottled city of Kandor (if you don't know about Kandor, don't ask, it's a long story). Supes lost his powers in Kandor, so he and Jimmy decided to fight crime as sort of a Batman and Robin type team. However, there are no bats and robins in Kandor, as it is a Kryptonian city. So, they used Kryptonian birds called Nightwing and Flamebird to inspire their costumed identities.

Incidentally, Robin heard about all this, and later took the Nightwing name as his own when he gave up the Robin mantle.

It's scary the amount of useless knowledge that exists in my brain.
