Rambo,
The term "mis-spent" was "tongue in cheek," I would hate to count the hours that I spent playing D&D.

that would be your opinion (unless you have some non-negative context/tongue in cheek to explain as well). oh well.

In reality it's actually the product of doing some research to find out how "evil" it is to allow my son to play, and then finding some common ground to help grow our relationship that had been waning since he began college. 8)

Postby Dr. Ron » December 9th, 2008, 11:03 am

I didn't say anything about "churches" and legalism. I think any "thinking and caring" parent would not allow their kids to get caught up in some of this stuff.........but then they would just turn their attention to sex........oh well,.

Eh at least I think they'd be aware of what it could open doors to.

hehe - yea, like eating can cause obesity. not eating can cause death. playing any kind of game can lead to obsessive compulsive behavior. playing sports can lead to overly competitive lifestyles and anger issues. playing D&D can lead to worshiping satan. playing yugio can lead to having no social life. :)

and I am still high bidder!! woohoo!!

Don't play stupid Brent.

There have been enough documented instances of Christians having spiritual encounters because they got too wrapped up in D&D or similar games...instead of being just a game, it became a lifestyle.

Yes it is up to each individual to know what level to take their fascination with the game to, and to know when to stop -- but I think what Dr. Ron is saying is that a Christian parent Biblically wouldn't allow their kids to play it.

I didn't see any condemnation in his statement, instead I see it lining up with Philippians 4:8. You know, think on things, that are true, lovely, of good report...I don't think a game that involves fantasy demonic activity lines up with that.

There is such a thing as common sense in Christianity and God wants us to exercise it. Legalism has nothing to do with it, it's about guarding your spirit against attacks from the enemy that we ourselves can initiate either wittingly or unknowingly.

Rambo, I just wanted to say that I grew up without a dad and it really would've been great to have a father who was willing to get involved in my life, even in the ridiculous stuff like Yugi. I'm sure your son will appreciate it.

play-stupid? you are assuming much if you think i am doing that. Remember I wasnt' raised in this church, I chose it in the direction God had lead me.
There have been enough documented instances of Christians having spiritual encounters because they got too wrapped up in D&D or similar games...instead of being just a game, it became a lifestyle.

documentation? right. there is also documentation that shows that humans evolved from a common ancestor of monkeys (no, I don't believe this either). I won't ask for your sources here, because I can cite others that will refute, or at least challenge them.
Yes it is up to each individual to know what level to take their fascination with the game to, and to know when to stop

exactly!! just like any other game/activity.
-- but I think what Dr. Ron is saying is that a Christian parent Biblically wouldn't allow their kids to play it.
please cite scripture for this apparent biblical doctrine that you guys are vicariously pushing on me and my family.
I didn't see any condemnation in his statement, instead I see it lining up with Philippians 4:8. You know, think on things, that are true, lovely, of good report...I don't think a game that involves fantasy demonic activity lines up with that.

completely understood here (though by my allowing my son to play a game and that I play - he purposely said I was not thinking and that I was not caring as a parent - this is a flat out LIE), but by this extension of logic to the extreme as you have done, you can not live in this world, since there is so much not true, not lovely, etc. do you have any secular education? you better not, since you would be violating that doctrine.
There is such a thing as common sense in Christianity and God wants us to exercise it.

I agree. but apparently your perception of common is not mine.
Legalism has nothing to do with it, it's about guarding your spirit against attacks from the enemy that we ourselves can initiate either wittingly or unknowingly.
I completely agree; what does this have to do with playing a game. is it about "pretending"? once again, your extension of logic in other areas does not make sense. do you watch TV or movies where there are actors? - okay, what about TV/movies (acting/pretending) where there are non-Christian activities that are not true, lovely, etc...?

double standard, is my opinion pf that paradigm.

with that said, i refer back to knowing my self and my children. as example, I wold not let my son watch certain TV shows and cartoons, because they affected him and he brought activities from them to his reality that were inhibiting his relationship with God. it's not just about bad words, violence, etc. It's about an individuals relationship with God. I can eat meat and not be idolatrous, but if I know someone around be would be hindered, I would not.

to be so dogmatic about playing a game, is legalistic, in my opinion, its the same mindset as saying that you can't wear jewelry, and total abstinence from adult beverages. I have a wedding band, and i don't drink, but I could not preach that the Bible teaches total abstinence of alcohol.

Again, can it lead to other things? yes, maybe, but not always, and not nearly even "most" of the time - it's an exception. so to proclaim abstinence of playing D&D as a doctrinal stand is wrong, in my opinion. Feel free to do that in your home as the head of the home. but to say that abstinence should apply to everyone is not right. another analogy is an example of a preacher I heard preach from the pulpit that wearing a tie is a sin and of the devil. not that it was a bad thing for him, personally - but that they were evil for everyone. and that is, in my opinion, what you guys are doing with that kind of thought process in judging a game.

it is NOT a lifestyle, unless you make it one. Christianity is not a lifestyle, unless you make it one.
