BCS NC Game

Postby turbotim » January 8th, 2009, 7:13 pm

It was a great game, but the SEC still remains supreme in a "down" year. 6 and 2 in bowl games this year with victories I think over the #1, #7, #15, #18 and #24. That's a pretty good year for an "overrated" conference. National Championship goes to the Southeastern Conference for the third year in a row. Which conference did that last? I think I heard it said during the game it was the BIG 10.

Great game.....

The Rebel Nation salutes the National Champion Florida Gators. :D A new bumper sticker is being created even now:
Ole Miss 31 National Champions 30.

The last time Ole Miss accomplished this feat was in 1977. They blemished the Notre Dame National Championship record by winning 20 - 13. I was at the game. :) (As a bit of trivia, QB Joe Montana sat on the bench as a freshman in that game)

After watching the game, I'm a believer. Superman does wear Tim Tebow pajamas!!!!

That loss to the Rebels was the best thing that could have happened to Florida. They were definately a different team after that!

The Gators deserve a congrats but as long as Utah is undeafeted, No. 1 is still in question, especially since they (Utah) rolled over the tide worse than what Fl. did. 8) Sorry to Alabamians.
What we need here is a good revival! lol

Scooter, no apologies needed for us "Bammers". Utah was a fantastic team, especially in the Sugar Bowl, and we just got beat. I'm not going to shrink from that.

BUT, more importantly today .... WAY TO GO GATORS!!!! I was impressed, big time, with the 2 goal line stands. That's the stuff of legend, right there. Loved, loved, loved watching that. Exciting, dramatic, and goes down as one (ok, 2) of the best defensive moments ever, IMHO. (Of course, I'm still partial to the 1979 Sugar Bowl with Bama and Penn State, but I digress...)

With all respect to those who argue that UF is not "the" NC this year, I just respond that Florida won it on the field. That's the only place that counts. I understand Utah's angst, and they did everything right this year. Them's the breaks. When D1 ball finally wakes up and goes to a playoff system, those kinds of anamolies will be few. Utah can call Auburn and ask them how they have dealt with what happened 5 years ago. It happens.

And, to those who think USC should've been there over Oklahoma, hey, I agree 100%. But, they weren't. As it is, they finished #2, and they deserve that. Florida/SoCal would've been a monster matchup for the ages. But, thanks to university presidents and entrenched money everywhere, we don't get to see that. We need a playoff.

However, Florida won last night against history's highest scoring offense, and they smacked it down with authority. If Tebow stays at UF, they are a lock .... and I mean a lock .... to return to the BCS National Championship game next year. If he doesn't stay, they still might. This team is poised to dominate.

Everybody in the SEC, all of us, should salute the Gators, and tighten up our chin straps next year (Bama wouldn't play Florida unless we're fortunate enough to win the SEC West next year.) Ole Miss, Bama and LSU will be competing for the chance to get beaten next year by Florida in the SEC Championship --- and we'll be beating each other up to get that chance. They are just that good, and I don't yield that up lightly because I'm a homer if ever there was one. But, I'm not a stupid one.

Congratulations Gators.

Dolfan, I normally agree with about everything you say, but this time it appears you are speaking out of both sides of your mouth. I mean where did UTAH win their games? On the moon?, at a card table? or better yet at a dice table? Not only did they win their games on the field, they won all, (that means every game) this year. Beat 'Bama worse than the lizards did from Gainsville, in what was a home game for 'Bama.

IMO, Texas or USC should have been in the NC game instead of OK. Talking about a dumb conference rule. I still stick to my opinion we has A National Champion, but not THE National Champion. I still think USC was the best team in the Nation.

Rob, might I assume you aren't a Gators fan? You call them lizards and you say the game should have been between Utah and either Texas or USC. Did Florida not show you anything the other night?

FQ - No, I am not a Gator fan. But you need to go back and re-read my post. I did not say the game should have been between Utah and Texas/USC. The game that I think should have been for the NC was Florida/USC.

To be totally honest with you I didn't watch the game, because I was not that interested in seeing those two teams play for a mystical National Championship. In my opinion those were not the two best teams in America. Since Florida won, and have been crowned, in my opinion I still do not believe that Florida was THE best team in America. I felt the best team during the bowl season was USC. If Pete Carroll had not called off the dogs he could have named his score against Penn St. Of course that is my opinion

My bad, it just seemed you were making a big case for UTAH, not that there is not a case to make, and so I guess I assumed you wanted them in the big game.

I am all for a playoff.

FQ - If I was the one making the rules for the BCS I would make a change that any non-BCS team, must schedule all BCS conferece schools for it's non conference schedule. Meaning Utah would have had to schedule 2 more BCS schools to have qualified for a BCS bowl. Utah played Michigan and Oregon St as part of their non conference schedule.

Hey, that's a good thought. I would definitely go along with that. I think that would add a lot more credibility to a non-BCS team going to the championship game.

Rob, I know Utah won it on the field. Believe me, I'm PAINFULLY aware.   Thanks for reminding me.

All I mean is that Florida was placed in the actual game in which the consensus among those "empowered" to name a champion vested the title of national champions. Are they the best team? I don't know. Are they the NC's? Yes.

I don't think Chargers are better than the Colts, but they played each other and the Colts won. They are, by definition of winning that game, "better" in the way that matters. Same for Arizona and the Panthers. The Eagles had a mediocre season, but they're playing fantastically right now. So, they are "better" than the Giants (minus Burress).

Florida played Oklahoma in "the game". They won it there, not by some opinion poll or finger in the wind as to who is better. Should Utah and USC and Texas have had their chances? Yes, yes, yes. Until we get a playoff, though, in almost any year, every BCS bowl team could stake a claim to deserving a shot at it. I'm with you that there may be other teams better than Florida and Oklahoma, but I can't deny or diminish Florida's win or their title because of that.

I like your idea about the BCS qualifying for non-BCS conferences, though. That's a good idea.
