Aside from that, the "worship" is not that different than some I have encountered in the cultures out side of this country. While I may not agree with what we all saw, I can say that that did not disturb me. It actually reminded me of many a night at the GA when the Bahama Brass Band would play everyone into a spiritual ecstacy and people would be jumping up and down (I did the same as a child as those kids) and running around the building, gyrating, falling in the floor...and the tamborines played on.....

Most of you are not old enough to remember or have knowledge of the "heritage" we all so proudly exhault. I am not ashamed, but I can tell you that what you saw was just a throw back to former days.

That kind of thing will always bring the crowds. Eddie Mounce, Carey Cox, Bobby Montgomery, Me, and a host of others used to "play without ceasing" during altar services that lasted for hours.

And maybe none of you ever witnessed a Friday night Healing Service at the GA in the really old tabernacle. The BBB played till they dropped. Their drum cadence was many times like the one you see in the video.

So that part didin't offend. It is the theology that makes me sick.

I resolved that the last Youth Camp "altar service" would be the last one I participated in, for it was just as you described. Heavy drum beat. Music so loud you had to yell into a kids ear to even be half understood.

Three out of five nights there was no preaching. No teaching. Just loud music and emotion.

The kid I was trying to pray for almost literally had his head up against the large bass drum of the drum set.

Finally I grabed him and said "lets get out of here." and led him out to a stairwell where i could talk and counsel with him. The effect of good counsel was as transforming to him as any emotional buzz.

I had a similar moment when I was the evangelist at a Manitoba youth camp. During the altar service, after praying at length with others, I got down on my face to pray by myself. It wasn't long before I realized that the drum and bass beats were pulsing through the room at high decibel levels and likely constituted a physical cause of the emotionalism that we all were experiencing. I became disgusted with and disturbed by it. It was a moment of realization that began to change my perspective toward our tradition's revivalism.

I agree with Ron that there isn't much difference between what the video showed and COGOP's classic worship style. Of course, our music was Appalachian and mostly in 3/4 and 4/4 time. We never allowed such freestyle tribal drumming devilry!

I must say, though, that I don't doubt one bit the sincerity of the young woman praying in the video.

It's all psychological, man. The louder they play the music, the louder the kids and group leaders have to shout to hear each other. Then because someone next to you is shouting, you have to amp up your volume because of the people next to you. Pretty soon the whole place becomes nearly unbearable and nothing really gets accomplished.

I also have seen that the louder the music gets, the more the "Holy Spirit" seems to operate. When it quiets down, everyone seems to stop praying.

Never understood it, and that's okay, I don't want to.
