This is a good thing

Even though I don't have a Facebook page.. I get TONS of friendship links from Facebook (some friends and some real spam) and I mark them ALL as spam!

I wondered why we got along so well, even when we disagree. :)

You have no idea how much great, relational interaction you are missing. I have connected with long-lost high school friends from 40 years ago, renewed acquaintances with people from my past, and formed connections with people around the world on Facebook.

That is exactly the way I describe it. Facebook is more relational. It is about connecting with people and really talking to them. I am now friends with people I went to school with that weren't even my close friends back then. It is awesome. Facebook has brought lots of people into my life that I never would have had the opportunity without.

Bingo. I have several easy methods to contact me on. I'm not that hard to look up. If you want to chat.. email or call me.

Chris,

I have made contact with at least 15 former classmates that I wouldn't have had the accessible opportunity if not for FB. It may not be for everyone and has it's negative aspects, but I have been reconnected to many friends from the years on one page, not to mention the new friends I've made. :)

I use classmates.com to keep in touch with former classmates, doesn't take up as much of my precious time.

Sounds Great. Especially if you are looking for that sort of social reconnection.

My main comment is that it's limiting to the public to access it. It needs to be open to viewers and only requested communication requires signup.

Imagine if Ebay required you to signup before you could see an Auction. They would sell much less.

I'm not selling anything on Facebook. I wouldn't be on Facebook if it were completely open. I don't want everyone on the street knowing what some of that info about me. I like Facebook, because I can choose my friends and choose who can see my profile.

Doesn't Classmates charge a fee?

Exactly! We actually agree.

Your page is limited to certain authorized views... thus it's missing the masses (on purpose and by design). This is just what I tell my clients questioning and desiring to be on Facebook to promote or sell something ( hearing all the buzz etc ). People enjoy it for social reconnection.. but not for reaching the largest audience for your ministry, book, band, group, etc etc.

God Bless

I've been thinking about the reason I value Facebook and you shun it, and here are a couple of thoughts:
• You have (I believe) lived in the same area and region most (all?) of your life, and probably have not lost track of as many old friends as I have.
• You are decades younger than I am... as you get older, move around, make life transitions, and your friends divorce, move, change careers, etc., you lose connections and find yourself longing to reconnect.

Maybe that's why the fastest-growing demographic on Facebook (which was created for university students) is those 35 years old and older.

Sure. However, you can set the restrictions to be open to everyone across global FB and not just U.S. FB, etc. There are actually several nationally acclaimed ministries on my friends list. There are several business people on there as well.

The FB experience is as open or closed as you desire within the community.

Seriously.. It's great at what it does.. but not really for reaching the masses and people I represent. If you are looking for lost friends, yes. If you are looking to promote a product, book, ministry or business.. having it behind a login/password isn't going to help you reach that goal. Again.. will friends find it, yes. But will a cold google search return the result? No.

Thanks I wish I was under 35. Ouch. Yes, I am rooted and promote Pastors, Teachers and Ministers to become rooted as that to me is key to long term effectiveness in any ministry ( but that's another thread ).

My comments are based on accessibility. If it's not open.. it's not reaching all it can. The site is geared by design to target to a cross section of users.
