Fact, Cal has graduated 19 of the last 22, he also started a program at Memphis and will probably do the same at UK where his one and done guys still will have the opportunity to come back and get their degree. Pretty good for a guy that doesn't care about grad rates. In his own acceptance he stated, guys have to go to class, go to tutoring, or not play. Time will tell if that is his policy.
Why is it the 19 0f last 22? Again you really need to look into the wording, and the reason for the wording, the wording is of the last 22 four years players 19 have their degrees. Which is normal, a person spends 4 years in school why should they not get their degree? The question is Why three four year players did not get their degree? Another is why not the entire time Cal has been the coach there? I can pull these players off of the top of my head. Wagner, Derrick Rose, Douglas Roberts, Shawne Williams, Sean Banks were all early entrants in the last several years. On setting up a program for kids who leave early to come back and get degree. I thought it was already done, I know that Louisville did that several years ago. If a student athlete leaves in good standing they can at anytime come back and get their degree. No matter the sport or reason for leaving or time. Kenny Payne came back and got his degree and then went on to be an assistant coach somewhere out west. Well if not going to class means no play then he is just doing what most other coaches do, remember Earl Clark missed the Ky game his freshman year because he skipped class. Well I am not sure but I do think the return policy is already in place at lessington. So you are saying he is a pretty good guy for doing something most others do. NOW I am not sure it is all about the players, it is about the Grad rate and the NCAA new rules. Kids leaving early for NBA or NFL hurt grad rates and over a period of time hurt the university.
While officiating a Christmas tourney this year in our region, I met a guy who is a "power broker" or "agent" whichever you want to call him. While spending 4 days with this guy, I personally heard him talk to such Coaches as Pitino, Gillisepe (sp), Cal, Roy Williams, Donavon, Huggins, "K" to mention a few. I answered his phone for him one time at it was Coach Pearl. As a matter of fact, Coach Pearl came to the tourney to watch the kid for Eastern play. My point is, tell me a coach that doesn't have a "agent" to scout these kids play today. The answer, guys who don't win that's who.
Are these power brokers given unlimited access to the programs? Are they brokering deals for players? Yes there are people who have contact, many because of AAU and shoe companies. BUT most of them do not do this for just one program. WWW brokered the deal for Wagner, his dad and his pal, WWW also was working on a deal with Evans, He was down to three schools when WWW got involved, he had evans narrow it down to Memphis and UofL. When WWW got involved Rick made it know that UofL was no longer interested in him. Evans came out and said it was down to UofL and Memphis, and that he was making an unofficial visit to UofL. Rick then said in public he was not going to be in Louisville that day and that UofL no longer had an interest in Evans. That is the public statement. This is what I know from a current player, I know this because I have a friend who is very close with all of the UofL players. Rick made it known that WWW would not be allowed in any UofL Locker rooms, and If he was given access to any current player that player would be as good as gone. WWW has a very bad rep, he has been banned from several colleges, Not just UofL.
Wonder if that means, after something is investigated and nothing could be proven, that nothing could be proven, thus nothing was done wrong. Dolfan, you're an attorney, could you help me with this? Maybe Johnny Cochran's line "If it doesn't fit, you must acquit" fits here.
SO since nothing could have been proven about hal mummie, he was innocent of what went on in the football program? What we do know is if you are investigated what you do is jump to the pros and refuse to answer any questions. The NCAA does not have the ability to force anyone to answer any questions. All they can do is ban them, but if the coach or player jumps ship nothing is done… Look at Mr Bush and USC, he admitted it on national TV and since no one will talk they get away with it. At Memphis there have been several things that have happened but never investigated by the NCAA. No if there is that much smoke and nothing gets proven it can be a number of things, 1 People are being paid off. 2, they are good at cheating. 3 The NCAA has selective enforcement. I think I see some SMOKE HERE. .... BTW. does that mean you think OJ didn't do it? if so most of the free worlds disagrees with you.
Tell me a school that hasn't?
True but how many stay on the team? How many can have major legal problems and all of a sudden have the charges dismissed. I am sorry but if you beat your Girlfriend put her in the hospital, you need more consequences than sit out a pre season game? You are not telling me you are fine with such treatment of people who abuse women? Do we see some SMOKE HERE?
As do most other schools as well.
Ok so we are just making excuses now, the everyone does it theory? Well I agree that kids make mistakes but the Kittens went thru all kinds of problems with kids and booze, pot, fighting, They had one player pull a gun on another player. PR nightmare, so the big Zero tolerance was announced but never enforced. Yes problems happen everywhere but not every program has a dog and pony shows and then never backs it up. The sad thing is the stuff the kittens were busted over were not one tenth as bad as the stuff going on in Memphis. Also let me say this, I have personal knowledge of one event that was hushed up. Looks like more SMOKE.
I'm sure Memphis is not the first and only school to do this, so that point is moot.
Again so everyone does it so that makes it ok? So if you were attacked and the charges were dismissed, I guess that would be ok since other schools do it. Say what you will but it goes to show that Cal is not some strict disciplinarian, again MORE SMOKE
If there is no rule against it, why is it questionable? If Memphis releases a kid he is open to the recruiting process. Kids no longer want to play for a certain school, as much as they want to play for a certain coach. So again, I'm not sure what the point is here.
Just like it was questionable for Billy G to go out and sign 8th graders. Look at the time frame. Cal leave Memphis, becomes Kitten coach, THEN HE TALKS TO MEMPHIS RECRUITS. According to your own comments. He is not allowed to talk to kids who have signed with other schools. THAT IS WHAT HE IS DOING.
Why punish a 18 year old kid for a decision he made to a coach at a school and the coach leaves? I've known CEO's leave a certain company, and take employees with them, should those employee's not be allowed to follow?
Well because EVERYONE ONE KNOWS that you sign with a school not a coach. That is made clear over and over. Yes employees leave to go with another CEO…. UNLESS they have a contract with the first company that they are required to fulfill. As well as many companies have employees sign a no compete clause. That is what is going on here, the NCAA says you sign the contract and that requires the school to fulfill part and you do your part. It is a contract. So if it why is it ok for the 18 year old to break his part but the College is not allowed to. If you see now, Cal is speaking with players that have signed LOI with Ky, If he doesn’t think it is a player he wants he can not just pull the offer once signed unless the player agrees. (both sides agreeing to break the contract) Cal tells a kid, I will let you come but you will not see a second of playing time and I will not renew your scholarship next year so you might as well go now. The NCAA LOI is about as one sided agreement as you can get, but NO KID is required to sign it. They can show up first day of school and sign the scholly papers and it is over.
Is that a fact? or an innuendo?
YES IT IS FACT. Look at the ncaa infractions list. Ky had been guilty of breaking rules in every decade from 1950s to 2000’s except one… 1990’s but they did get busted twice in the 80’s so that makes up for that. Wonder who was in charge in the 90’s, wonder who was the Head coaches of the football and basketball programs then.
I agree with that, however, what has he done lately? Besides, he said no, twice so he wasn't coming to UK anyway.
So lately means just the last two years? Well Billy D has won two titles, how many has cal won? How many final fours does Cal have? (be careful one was vacated because of cheating in the program he was supposed to be in charge of) Yes Billy D has went to the NIT last two years but if you recall Memphis has been to Nits lately too. YES Billy D was not coming but I say too many fans and media as well as BrainFart are now willing to overlook the smoke in Cals programs just to get wins. I think that is a fire they don’t want.
Now we get to the root of it. There is probably not a coach that I dislike only one school that I can think of that I really dislike and that is ND. Simply because they get their cake and eat it too. I think the BE should tell them get in or out, not in in a few sports but not football.
OK now the world is coming to an end… we agree on ND. BUT NO this has nothing to do with my feelings for cal, I actually like it because I think within a few years they will once again be on some type of probation. There are a lot of coaches I don’t like, I never liked Billy G, or Tubby that much but Tubby got a bad rap by the fans and Billy thought he could do things his way and found out he could not. Also Billy G was a last second last hope for a coach, we were told over and over how good a recruiter he was and how good a coach he was, YET when he got here we seen he was not that great a coach, and then when looked in depth at his recruiting that was supposed to be so great, was not, Patterson was a Tubby sign, he was given credit for Law at A&M but he did not sign him either. The kids he signed in lessington never panned out either.
Amazing he just left Fed Ex arena and the CEO of Fed Ex was a major contributor to the Memphis program and he didn't send any packages there, that we have record off. Of course with those connections surely it could slip under the radar and now that he left them high and dry Fed Ex will turn him in now.
Well you need to also know that a recruits mother worked for FEDEX the FEDEX CEO contacted his worker and said how much he wanted her son to play at Memphis. (an NCAA violation ) the kid signed a few days later. But nothing ever done. (you can look it up)
I'll make a deal with you Tony, If in 5 years or the length of Cal's contract there has nothing be found out about him and he remains clean, you will acknowledge that you were wrong about him. You still don't have to acknowledge he's a great coach, just that he has run a clean program. If you agree, and Cal is found to have done somethings wrong I will acknowledge that you were correct.
The truth of the matter is, time will tell about Coach Cal. Until then all these crazy Cat fans will have something to talk about until the season begins next year.
Problem is no matter how long his contract at ky is I will never say he runs a clean program because he skirts the rules at every other place he has been.
To run a clean program, it has to be clean, He did not run a clean program at Umass, the program he was in charge of was busted and Memphis there is so much smoke but since he is leaving no one will look any further. But to be fair you will say is it a clean programs as long as NCAA does not do anything. Well to me that just means they are good cheaters. SO if we go back to the glove doesn't fit theroy, As long as OJ doesn't get happy with his knife ever again he was clean before.
