CURL: The cost of a NYC weekend
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/200 ... c-weekend/

In February, Obama scolded corporate executives (while also costing Las Vegas some $130 million) when he said: "You can't get corporate jets. You can't go take a trip to Las Vegas, or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayers' dime."

.... One early estimate (from the New York Post) put the cost at $24,000. Absurdly low. The Daily Mail in London threw out another number — $75,000. Sure, three times as much as the first estimate, but still probably spectacularly low. Remember, joyriding Air Force One around for a few hours over Manhattan a couple months ago cost $250,000, so the cost of the weekend trip was likely not likely that low.

...So if the whole thing cost $250,000, the Obamas offset that by at least a few hundred bucks. Phew.

******

This begs the question.. how much is ok to spend before people get irritated? $24,000 - $75,000 - $200,000+?

Remember nobody else can do this. The rest of us have to tighten our belts and cut back our lavish lifestyles that is hurting the environment.

Hey... where are the environmentalists? I guess that green outrage only belongs to Corporate or Regular Americans.... while the elected Govt. leaders get a free pass?

Something to think about....

I don't know, I am still waiting on you to tell me where the outrage was when a Republican president spent far more taxpayer money than any other president in history for things like his trips to Texas and the war in Iraq.

This whole deal pales in comparison to that. I'll shut up now and leave you to your misguided outrage.

apples and oranges... Unless you specify which R pres and exactly the state of the economy, so that the comparison could be analyzed.

This quote sums up my problem with the trip. Look, obviously presidents take trips and we pay for them. We have to keep him and his family secure. My problem is with Obama's hypocrisy. He demonizes CEOs who fly on a private jet, and yet, he does the exact same thing. And this wasn't a "business trip", it was for fun. If he's going to criticize others for doing it, he needs to be able to take the criticism for doing it himself.

Beav, the fact that another president also wasted taxpayer money does not for one second relieve Obama from accountability for his own standard. Bush loved spending. There was never any doubt about that. Obama loves it, too -- as long as he gets to decide who'll do it and who'll get the benefit of it. That's the difference, and it's a whopper.

so the president is not allowed to leave the white house? Not allowed to go home? Not allowed to eat dinner, none of these things? Because normal travel in Air force one would have cost more, much more.

There are so many real issues to discuss, that is why this looks so cheap to me. This cost will be the same if not more anytime he leaves the white house.
If it was Palin Mac and she was president and went to dinner with her husband, then the press ripped her apart you would be saying the same thing...what she cant go out to dinner? Matter of fact in a recession they spent how much on clothes? Did we not all get upset with that accusation and how they treated her?

How about the fact he is taking over business's which is also going to be a ploy to have universal health care because it will be said business cant run with the current system, the cost is to high. Then he will force them to make all small cars so to end the SUV issue... How about the fact the cold war is starting all over again... these are issues that are important, not that he went to dinner!

I ask again he is not aloud to ever leave the white house? this would be the first president that ever would have to abide buy those rules. Hope he never has to fly his daughters anywhere.......

The President is a man with a wife and family. Of course he gets time for life, but he's the one who set the standard on this thing, and then he blatantly violates it and expects a pass? Don't think so.

Dolfan did he ask for us to not go out to dinner? I am confused.... I have not heard him say dont go to a dinner and a show. I thought it was about spending, not a night out. This part I could be wrong I do not know the quote exactly.
Either way even if he said we need to cut back I do not think he should get this much grief for paying for dinner for his wife and a show. The rest of the cost is out of his hands, it comes with the job. Issues, is what we need to go against, not what they did to Bush or palin. Issues..........

Obama demonized CEO of private corporations who took
TARP money for taking a private jet to business related events. He said that was a waste of money. Now, he uses tax payer money to go see a broadway show.

I'm not saying it's wrong for him to see the show. I'm not saying it's wrong for him to use Air Force, Marine One, the limos, the Secret Service Agents, etc. to go see the show. But it IS wrong for him to demonize private individuals for doing something the HE HIMSELF does. It is hypocrisy!

Are you saying that the lives of brave men and women that have died to defend our freedom after the USA was attacked on 9/11 is equal to a night on the town in New York? At least President Bush defended our freedom and did not try to lead us into a socialistic society.

The two events are not equal but if one thinks Obama's dinner date was a waste of money, then let's all open our eyes to a current situation that is ongoing that is one of the most colossal wastes of money in modern-day American history.

Bush went into Iraq on false pretenses, several people in his administration have even said that. Still the guy made no effort to get us out of there. OIL is the word.

Gotta put both shoes on, can't say the shoe fits for one foot and not the other equal-sized one.
