I HATE Bajas.
I dont have the skills to fit a new rear end on it, and don't even know if it can be done.
I'll say one thing about FLA I see ten times as many Old Bugs here as I do back home.
Yea, stick with a complete body car. Some Bajas can be converted easily back into a standard bug.. but you have to source so many new parts that it would be easier to just buy a full complete unmolested body.
Bajas are great for people whom do them right and enjoy them for a specific purpose. They are some serious low cost light weight off-road vehicles. Several years back.. a teenage kid inherited his grandfathers cherry 66 and brought it to church. Beautiful & near perfect. The next week.. he had butchered it up so bad ( I could have killed him ) in attempts to build a baja to offroad with his "buds". He blew the tranny a few weeks later and crashed it a few times.. basically destroying a beautiful car. I purchased it for small pocket change and still use it for parts now.
The key is finding a solid unmolested car with limited to zero rust. If you can find that... the rest can be easily restored without major surgery. You basically take each area you want to learn to restore, research, and go slow. If you make a mistake.... try again. Learn the skills the old fashion way.. trial and error.
Best of Luck.
