Weekend of 10-4

Postby Rob » October 4th, 2009, 3:33 am

Another great weekend of college football. A lot of good and close games and some in overtime. I loved the Thursday night game this week, WVU won. And Michigan lost to Michigan State 2 times in a row, wonderful! Another top ten team went down, OK, but again I think this should have been the first weekend there is a poll and since I mentioned that here is my Top Ten, agree or disagree?

1. Texas - I think they are playing the best of anybody in the country.
2. Alabama - A West Virginia boy has the Tide rolling, they are impressive
3. Florida - I know they are the defending National Champs, but I have not been as impressed with them this year as last, I know they are suppose to be #1 till they get beat, but not in my opinion. Besides they just might get beat this weekend in Baton Rouge
4. LSU - I thought they were overrated till they went between the hedges and beat the Dogs, now let's see what they do with the Gators at home.
5. USC - If not for a hiccup in Seattle, they might be #2, but when all is said and done, they might be right there playing for the NC.
6. Va. Tech - Beamer has them playing his style of ball, but I'm not sure how good they are in a weak conference.
7. Ohio State - Maybe the 2nd best team in the state of Ohio behind
8. Cincinnati - The hottest coach in college football right now, Brian Kelly watch for him at ND next year.
9. Iowa - Maybe the best team in the Big Ten, they have Michigan this week at home, let's see what happens there.
10. TCU - A very solid team from a Non-BCS conference. I think they could possibly be your BCS buster this year.

Why no Boise St you ask? They beat Oregon, they play in a very weak Non-BCS conference, and they struggled this week with a D-II team.

PastorRob --

Good list. You know, I'm one of those Bama fans who finds the cloud in every silver lining. The defense played only a fair game against Kentucky on Saturday. Big plays, yeah, but way too much ground given up and too many points. We play that way against Ole Miss and I think we lose that game. So, with Hightower gone and the new lineup still being tinkered with and all, I'm just really shaky about the Rebels, even if they did blow one against S. Carolina. All that said, I think we can be no better than 3rd best in the nation. I still would put us after Texas and Florida (and, I'm with you that Texas should be #1). If Bama wins against Ole Miss this week, a top 25 team and at their house, I feel better about our defense. Whatever happens this Saturday, our guys will have to pin their ears back and go after it again because the following week brings S. Carolina to Tuscaloosa. If we beat both those teams, then I feel a lot more comfortable saying we're in the top 3 teams in the country. Today, Bama stands as a 4 point favorite going into that game with Ole Miss.

LSU, to me, is still overrated. I know they beat Georgia, but were it not for that horrible celebration call after Georgia's last minute TD, that game would've been a two point game (LSU probably would've converted a FG). Georgia was moving well enough to respond in kind. It's hard to say the penalty decided the game, but it's easy to say it could've been easily the other way without that penalty. Case of refs interfering unduly.

I came across this sitelast night, and had never heard of it. Interesting poll of teams in the SEC, ACC and Southern conferences. (Non-SEC guys .... this site isn't my idea.)

I visited the poll site. I can't believe Boston College is listed anywhere on that board. Clemson isn't great but beat them BAD. In fact, BC literally barely had positive yardage for the entire game against Clemson and only scored on a fluke play off a turnover. No way they are top 4 in ACC. I would rank them behind Wake, Clemson, NC State, NC, besides Miami, G.Tech, & V. Tech. I don't understand Florida State. How do you go to BYU and beat them handily and then lose to Boston College? There are probably 3 decent teams in the ACC - V.Tech, G.Tech, & Miami.
You want to talk about tough times? Try being a Clemson fan. They have lost 3 games by a total of 9 points at G.Tech, to TCU, and at Maryland with 2 missed field goals and a fumble on their 31 yard line on your last possession.

I had the same thoughts. Interesting effort, but I'm with you.

I think Bama is better than you realize, sure they didn't play well against UK, but then again it is UK, and sometimes you find yourself playing to the level of your competion. I think they beat Ole Miss, and I think they handle the west. Saban is just flat out a great coach. He will have a new wrinkle for the Rebels this week.

They may be; but, after the Dubose to Shula years, I've been conditioned to expect failure. That's hard to shake off after so long.

I think they get the linebacker rotation nailed down this week. I just wish Terrell Harris had only been suspended for 5 games instead of 6.

I expect an old fashioned slobberknocker on Saturday afternoon. Crank up the HD, y'all. And, I wish Verne Lundquist would get laryngitis before this weekend.
