My Top Ten

Postby Rob » October 31st, 2009, 6:03 pm

Another exciting week of college football. Here's my Top Ten and my thoughts on a few things this weekend.

First - I think I need someone to explain to me again the reason for Instant Replay. Obviously it's not to get the call right. The SEC officials have been ripped, and for this weekend, the Big Ten is not far behind them.

Here's my Top Ten for this week. Again you will notice that Boise is not listed. I'm not a Boise hater, They just need to play someone beside the Sister's of the Poor otherwise known as the WAC conference.

1. Florida - They looked very good against Georgia How many years of eligibility does Tebow have left? Seems like he has been there a decade.

2. Texas - They looked very good against Ok. State. Their defense seems to be the real deal.

3. Alabama - Bye Week with a big game against LSU next week.

4. Cincinnati - The class of the Big East should two of the top 3 lose they could sneek in.

5. Iowa - I wonder what would have happened had a couple of the questionable calls that were reversed against Indiana done to the final score of this game.

6. TCU - I think this team will be your BCS spoiler.

7. Oregon - The Beavers put it to USC. Anybody who thinks this team would lose to BSU again.........well I'd love to see them play again.

8. LSU - We will see if this team is for real next week or not.

9. Penn State - And just think a few years ago some folks thought Joe Pa should hang it up.

10. Georgia Tech - This team seems to be the class of the ACC, but then again this is a weak class.

Okay guys take your shot, and I will duck.

Boise's #1, Boise's #1, Boise's #1 - Ahh maybe not. Maybe USC was just WAY overrated and that's why Oregon beat them. Best 2 out of 3. Best 3 out of 5. Best 5 out of 7. You know how you stop assuming? You step out on the field and play. They did and Boise won. Boise's #1, Boise's #1, Boise's #1!!! Sisters of the Poor? I guess that leaves out the PAC 10 because their best team got dominated by the team that can only beat the "Sisters of the Poor." You know what its like? Its like the Heavyweight contender who padded his record by fighting 35 cupcakes. Then he steps in with the champ and beats the champ. You can't say, "Well he only fought cupcakes." That was only true until he beat the champ. All the cupcake talk has to go away because he stepped in the ring and proved he was the better fighter no matter who else he fought.

People want a playoff system in NCAA football. Why? People would just say, "Well if they played again...."

Here is the Legit Top 10. It can't be the final Top 10 but it is a good one for right now.

1. Florida (Texas won't stop their run)
2. Alabama (Texas won't stop their run)
3. Texas (More horses than the rest)
4. TCU (Would be a great game with Cincinnati)
5. Cincinnati
6. Boise (I don't think they're strong enough for the big 3)
7. Iowa (Don't belong this high but they're undefeated)
8. LSU (Best 1 loss team in the country
9. Oregon (2nd Best 1 loss team in the country)
10. Georgia Tech (3rd best 1 loss team in the country)

Hey I got them at #7, they could be up to 5 if you move TCU and Iowa down, but I think Cincy is legit.

Pastor BPS - We all know that Boise beat Oregon on the First weekend of college football. However, since that time, Oregon has steadily improved while Boise, IMO has not. They struggled to beat a D2 team in Cal-Davis and Tulsa. And as beat the likes of San Jose St., Hawaii, a don't really have a quality team to play left on their schedule.

If we had a playoff, we wouldn't have to say, "if they played them again", because it would be settled on the field. That is why College Basketball is light years ahead of college football. It is settled on the court.

I think your top 3 like mine are all interchangable. However, I'm confused by your comments. How can Texas have more horses, but not be able to stop Fl or Bama's run? I think Bama has the best defense of the 3 with TX following and FL a distant 3rd.

In your Top Ten the only team right now I think Boise could play with would be TCU and Iowa, I think they rest would be at least a 10 point favorite with the possible exception being Cincy and that will be till Pike gets back.

I meant Texas has more horses than all the rest meaning all but Florida and Alabama (Teams like TCU, Boise, & Cincinnati may execute better but they may not have near the athletes of a Texas).

I still don't get your reasoning regarding Oregon and Boise. You say Boise hasn't improved because of how they have played against low quality teams BUT teams will sometimes play to the level of their competition. Your argument about the low quality of their competition only holds water IF they had not played. They played. Oregon lost. It is settled until Boise loses or they play again. As I said before, if they had played the game the last game of the season instead of the first game of the season, the strength of their schedule wouldn't matter because they proved to be the better team when they played. Now change that to the first game of the season and you see my argument.

I get your argument about them not scheduling quality teams. That is why I have them #6 but I won't put them below Oregon.

I may change my tune after Saturday, but I still don't think LSU is a top 10 team. I like Pastor Rob's list as is. I think it is probably the best list I've seen anywhere this year, and reflects as closely as any of us could arrive at the real order of how good the teams are right now. If I were to make a change, I'd flip Oregon and TCU, but that's just a matter of taste and my preference for a team I've watched probably. I'd sub Boise in LSU's spot, too. I may be digging my own football grave with that statement, but I believe it based on how LSU has played this year so far. I'm not convinced they can succeed against Bama's defense. I'm not convinced Bama will score more than 20, but I don't know that they'll need to.

BCS Poll and the AP Poll agree with that.

TCU played that college "powerhouse" UNLV Saturday and walked all over them. Now if that ain't a "cupcake" I don't know what is.

For now they do, but let's continue to watch these polls and see who is right at the end when the dust settles.

Don't go there. Besides that was a conference game. At least TCU has played at Clemson and won, who beat Miami. They went to Provo and beat BYU, who beat OK. They still have to play Utah. TCU is a legit BCS buster.

TCU beat them 41-0. This is the same UNLV that lost to Oregon State by 2. It is also the same TCU that beat BYU by 31 on BYU's home field. They also lead the same conference which sent Utah to whip Alabama in last year's bowl. Don't underestimate TCU.

We'll see on TCU. They're good. BCS good? Maybe so. I don't WANT them to be, as the former team coached by Dennis Franchione (yes, I hold a grudge on that one thing). Anything that helped Fran make his way to Bama is nothing I want to see bloom now.
