Isaiah 56
4 For this is what the LORD says:
"To the eunuchs who keep my Sabbaths,
who choose what pleases me
and hold fast to my covenant-
5 to them I will give within my temple and its walls
a memorial and a name
better than sons and daughters;
I will give them an everlasting name
that will not be cut off.
That's from the NIV, but it's about the same idea in other versions.
Based upon your understanding of this passage, what does this say about transsexuals finding the Lord and serving Him? How would that work out in your local church context?
I'm missing the connection to transsexuals in the passage. Eunuchs in the ancient world were nearly all made so involuntarily. The sin against their personhood is clear to us but, to them, the denial of the ability to have children--which was everything to the ancients, think of stories referring to barren women--was the far greater loss. That's the context the passage is speaking to. God is promising that, though they have no seed, in Him their name will be preserved.
But perhaps the passage was just meant to be a segue to discuss ministry to transsexuals. Some of the responses so far miss the mark. Transsexualism is usually the result of very deep spiritual/psychological injury and is not a chosen sexual perversion/lifestyle. Transsexualism is not about sex, really, and most are celibate. Ministry to them is less like ministry to homosexuals or fornicators and more like ministry to rape/abuse/war victims, schizophrenics/bipolars, or deeply depressed persons. The difference, of course, is that compassion for them and overcoming the revulsion/fear are more difficult.
For the truth that lies at the heart of theology is not something there to be discovered, but something, or rather someone, to whom we must surrender. The mystery of faith is not ultimately something that invites our questioning, but something that questions us.
