i suppose it is yet to see if the retailers will reflect the drop in price per barrel.

Oil doesn't have to move much in one direction or another for gas retailers to move their prices accordingly. Competition is intense, lots of choices for drivers. And, believe you me, people will drive two or three miles to save 20 cents on a tank of gas.

i do know alot about retail. i would say the off brand water and the fountain drinks are the largest mark up in a gas station, so why not lose alot of money on the gas and sale those fountain drinks.

I'm bolding that part of your quote for a reason. You don't sell NEARLY enough grocery items, even in our extremely busy store, to make up for even a one-cent per gallon loss on gas.
Our store sales exceeded $3 million last year. Now, before you go and say "Wow, man!!!", know that about 70 percent of that was gasoline sales. Another roughly 15-18% was cigarette and tobacco sales. We are a "penny profit" retailer on cigarettes, meaning we sell them on the absolute thinnest margin possible in order to get the best pricing from the tobacco companies. We are interested in volume and where we are located, cigarettes make our other inside sales happen (that's true for most c-stores, actually). Our cigarette prices actually help our gas sales because we are in one of the most smoker-heavy concentrations (percentage wise) of populations in the south. Our other inside sales account for about 12-15% of total sales, and that's where we actually have to turn a profit. The gains on gas and cigarettes don't even cover our overhead.
So, if we took even a penny per gallon hit on gas, we'd more than wipe out in a day the gains that we made on all other non-gasoline sales in that day. You won't be open very long doing that. Plus, we'd have to make up that penny to the wholesaler, wouldn't we? One penny down, and you're in a deep hole within one day. So, "that myth is busted".

again, off brand water and fountain drinks are your highest MARKUP!!! what you are talking about is cash flow not markup or profit skus. as long as the price goes up at the pumps you guys are hurting your in store sales where the money is made. i refuse to buy anything in a station. you guys are robbing people at the pumps therefore i wont buy your drinks and gum and day old hotdogs.
