I love Apple, but the initial buzz that I'm hearing about this "toy" is unfavorable. Most recommend paying the extra $500 for the MacBook. :)

the buzz is that VOIP has been approved over 3G just at this release and it's going to a mean skype ipad

Skype is nothing more than Google Voice without video ability, and the lack of a camera on the iPad will hurt sales.

Absolutely no doubt the lack of camera kills it. It's going to happen and Apple is going to offer it soon. I thought it should have been included in the beginning and placed on the front for easy video conferencing.

Here again is proof. Early adopters pay the expense and get half the thrills. I do really hate this as it stagnates the product ( maybe on purpose?)

iPhone SDK calls out nonexistent iPad cam

...running the updated iPhone simulator in iPad mode gives you the option to take photos, which doesn't make a heck of a lot of sense considering that it doesn't have a camera. There are plenty of plausible explanations for the muck-up, but our guess is that Apple's left the vestigial capability on-board since the framework's already in place for the iPhone and there could very well be iPads down the road that have a cam (or two).

still are REQUIRED to use iTunes. can't just load software, making it not a PC, but a big iPhone. a niche market to be sure, so it has it's uses. but to use it as a ebook reader is not a choice I would make for it any more than I would use my iPhone or my laptop (tablet PC) something I would use for extended reading. :)

as for a next version with a camera, hopefully it will be on a swivel of some kind so that it can face forward, or back. :)

looks kewl. but like the iPhone I am glad I didn't get a first gen. and the MAIN reason I got an iPhone was to use my Logos4 software.

Speaking of which, if (when?) a L4 app for the iPad comes out...

PG.. the iPad has a slot already included in the frame that allows for a camera. Charge a few extra dollars.. but include the camera.

The frame of the first-generation iPad is meant to hold a camera, even though no camera is present, a repair company observes. Mission: Repair says it has already received an initial shipment of spare iPad parts, ahead of the device's March release date. In examining the frame, technicians have noticed an unexpected slot which perfectly fits the camera module from a unibody MacBook, including components like the ambient light sensor.

Talking with our Apple Rep a few weeks ago (they aren't given much inside information, Apple is pretty tight-lipped on new releases) they said the reason we don't see cameras on producst like the Ipod Touch (and I would assume on this one as well) is because it really narrows the difference between these and the iPhone, and they want some feature benefits to the iPhone that separate it from the ipod Touch.

I thought this looked great until I heard it runs on the same OS as the touch and Iphone, and not on a full Mac OS. If they could push this a little further, giving the full Mac OS option, it would open the doors to so many more apps and make this a viable low end computer in an extremely small case. without that, it's not got the features of most netbooks, and is pretty much an oversized Ipod touch.

Really blow people out of the water with this product, push it to full Mac OS, plus add phone capabilities (you'd have to use a headset, and a remote keypad for dialing without having to pull the whole thing out be cool) and have a laptop/iphone hybrid that could really hit big.

Good Points PB.

Btw.. as if the Obama Administration didn't have it's hands in enough already...

FCC : Message from the iPad: Heavy Traffic Ahead
http://blog.broadband.gov/?entryId=138385

Apple’s iPad announcement has set off a new round of reports of networks overburdened by a data flow they were not built to handle. These problems are reminiscent of the congestion dialup users experienced following AOL’s 1996 decision to allow unlimited internet use

Are all these guys idots? Or is they actually still using dialup?
