podcasting...

Postby RamboPreacher » February 23rd, 2010, 2:59 pm

I have been requested to have my classes podcasted. so while I consider myself technicaly able, I have researched this and don't seem to find anything that is step by step on what to do and how.

I am willing to pay for something, but not sure I should at first. I record my preaching/teaching with a digital recorder, and most others were direct to CD. I can rip CD's with the best of them and convert audio to just about anything.

what I haven't found is how to get my audio to be an actual podcast. you know, like one that will show up as a free podcast on iTunes or Zune.

any suggestions/assistance is appreciated.
Thanks, Brent "RamboPreacher" Hoefling

Rambo I used to podcast. I think there are a bunch of sermons still there.

Have gone to Video Streaming (does not have to be live) Using Livestream.com its free.

You have the easy part done. Recording and creating the MP3 files.

I am not good at documenting but maybe some of this will point you in the right direction. If you have questions you have my numbers.. :)

---------------------------------------------

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_RSS

http://www.ehow.com/how_2027326_publish ... tunes.html
http://www.how-to-podcast-tutorial.com/ ... osting.htm

Basically do the following.

record class.
convert file into a MP3 format file. (1 hour sermon would be about 10meg in size)

FTP MP3 file to a hosting site.
(http://www.greensborocogop.org/sermons/mp3/*.* is where I had ours)

Then you create a RSS file that points to your MP3 files. you update this file as you add more MP3 files.

Register with Itunes and point them to the RSS file. This file feeds the Itunes podcast server with a list of your mp3 files.

here is a sample file I found on Yahoo..
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Virgin RSS file in TXT format. with XML extension

Title of your site

A description of your podcast show

<itunes:author>Your Name </itunes:author>

<itunes:image href="http://www.yourserver.com/YourPodcastPicture.jpg" />

This is just a test

A description of your podcast episode

<itunes:author> Your Name </itunes:author>

"PubDate" is the time you last updated and published the podcast.

"Length" is the size of the file in bytes. On a Windows computer, you can find this by going to the MP3 file in Windows Explorer and right-clicking on the file. Select "Properties." The exact size of your MP3 is under "Size." On a Mac, select the file and click "Apple+I" to see the file information. The file size will be shown under "Size." Enter in this number without commas.

Note: Every time you add another podcast episode, you will need to create another podcast episode, or "item." Copy all the code from
to
and paste this text after the last
. Now, update all the blue text with information for the new podcast episode.

Note: Some other podcast directories have created their own code extensions to standard RSS. One example is the iTunes directory. For more details on adding iTunes' additional code, visit the iTunes RSS specifications In the spirit of encouraging an open standard, Yahoo! Podcasts has not created any additional code of its own, but supports commonly used standards, including iTunes'.

After you've made these changes, save the file in plain text format and with the file extension "xml" (for example, "MyPodcast.xml"). Upload this file to your web host, just as you did earlier for your MP3 file.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is what it looked like with our first two podcast. and the file keeps growing as you add more podcast.

Rambo,

In the past I have paid for the assistance of the folks at http://www.PodcastMyChurch.com.

I uploaded an MP3 file to their site, they put a musical and vocal intro/ending and took care of all the iTunes and feedburner posting aspects of the podcast.

It is well worth the monthly fee (you get multiple uploads per week for the fee). They are awesome and I will use them again in the future.

Rambo, you can do it free but it does take Techie Skills as you have seen.

However..

Streaming Video is a breeze. And it does not have to be live.

Record on a MiniDV video camera. Take home and upload to

Ustream.com
Livestream.com (the one I use) Lots of bells and whistles.

And others.

Exactly. I never understood the "live streaming demand". I much prefer to be able to come back and access it when I have the time. The other is to much like wanting to be on TV.

Record, Edit, Document Details, and Post = Priceless

We are doing Both.. We are live 11 am ESt on Sundays. But on demand is available 24x7.

Also LIvestream has the TV setup. I have about 5 sundays that play continously one after the other. usually the last 4 or 5 sundays.

You are a valuable addition Billy. Keep up the great work.

Everyone have to evaluate what a website is and what it's purpose is. Added value etc and not replacing the real thing.

Example: Apple is a good model. In the past they used to broadcast the Macworld Keynote live. Then they stopped and only offered it as a later download. Macworld attendance apparently was dwindling down.. because reporters could stream it live and not be on site. Attendance returned when they stopped live streaming.

So streaming was harmful to the event. After they understood this.. they changed the purpose to not undermine.. but as a resource.

Again.. the idea of "being on TV like" streaming for Pastors can really effect what it's real purpose should be.

Clear as mud?
