Why Jesus Arose on the 3rd Day

Postby Rascal » March 31st, 2010, 3:57 pm

I was told by a 7th Day Adventist that the reason Jesus did not rise until Sunday was because (he believes) Saturday was the sabbath and He was not allowed to under jewish law. I don't know any scripture to back this up at all. What about it?

I dunno either. It may have some merit though, in relation to the interaction afforded the disciples, all Jewish and Torah observant at the time, though Christian, in 1st century Jerusalem. For instance, we know the ladies didn't go to the tomb to tend his body till Friday because that Thursday was a special "high" sabbath (not a normal one falling on the 7th day).

The reason (or at least a primary one) is that is was part of the fulfillment of the Passover festival (not to be confused with the day of passover proper or the meal) -- specifically the 3rd feast of the festival called FirstFruits.

Simplified, Jesus rose on the third day as a fulfillment of the feast of First Fruits.

He also rose on the 3rd day as a fulfillment of the sign of Jonah, who was in the belly of the whale 3 days and nights.

i think that Jesus had taught at other times about doing "work" was acceptable on the Sabbath. that included healings, so why would he "refuse" to rise Himself on a Saturday just because of a "Sabbath" that He was Lord over?

He was busy? Mercy Seat? Physically Strolling thru releasing and ministering?

One thing to remember is that Jesus was NEVER in a hurry. He literally knew about his devine nature at 12 or possibly earlier.. and yet continued to work peacefully in the carpenter shop until he was much older.

Remember... God was well pleased with his Son at John's Baptismal and He basically had never done anything as it related to His ministry yet.

Sometimes we might need to just sit still also, eh? Knowing our relationship is paternal rather than performance.

Jesus death and resurrection fulfills all. In that he was the Lamb slain on passover and the seed planted in the ground that rose up to new life as the firstfruits of the dead. So the three days fulfills both the passover Lamb and the firstfuits.

The wave-sheaf offering shortly after Passover was the first fruits of the barley that the priest offered to God in the early spring. It was always waved “on the day after the Sabbath” after Passover (Lev. 23:11). This day is sometimes called the feast of the first fruits or the counting of the omer.

Barley was the first crop to ripen in the spring in Canaan and Egypt. In fact, the Hebrew month of Abib (“green ears”) has direct reference to the ripening of barley in that month. On the first day of that month, the priest would inspect a sheaf of barley to see if it had “eared out” yet. If so, it was announced to all the people that Passover would be observed in Jerusalem two weeks later. If the barley grain was still closed, with the grain covered by the husk, the priest would announce that they would have to wait another month before Passover could be observed lawfully.

Passover signified the death of the lamb and had prophetic reference to the crucifixion of Jesus. The wave-sheaf offering signified resurrection from the dead, for on this day Jesus was raised.

Why Jesus Arose on the 3rd Day

He arose the third day because He was fore ordained from the foundation of the world. Then the word of God then fore told of it and that the way it was to be. No great puzzle to work out.
God Bless

Also....

(Psa 16:10) For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

(Act 2:27) Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

(Act 2:31) He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.

(Act 13:35) Wherefore he saith also in another psalm, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

Initial decay can begin 0-3 days after death. (edited: under normal circumstance...because of the custom of wrapping the body with oils and spices (and prob. the cool cave) decay was somewhat delayed. But Jesus was buried quickly due to the Sabbath and did not receive this custom.)

Putrification (decomposition/corruption) began at 4 days, which is why they said Lazarus "stinketh".

I don't have to prove God's existance. He's already proven that. I just have to prove that He lives within me.

I though Jesus body was anointed with ointment while he lived and at the house of simon the leper. But while in the grave was never anointed with spices for when the women came to sepulchre the stone was rolled away and he was go.

You're so right. No great puzzle for God has fortold of his plan for death and new life in the feast.

Why 3 days? The passover is on the 14th but not until "even" on the 15th is the Lord's passover (Leviticus 23:5) Which is the death of the Lamb of God and then the firstfuits comes on the morrow after the sabbath and the priest shall wave it before the Lord God.(Leviticus 23:11) Which the firstfuits of harvest is to that which was planted in the ground dead will come to life in three days and being the firstfuits of the harvest of those in the grave.

So the three days can account for passover [death] and firstfuits [resurrection].

You're right. Typed that one too fast didn't I... (right before heading out to church tonight.) Added that thot off the top of my head, which would have applied under normal circumstances.

However, you are right, Jesus was buried quickly.

However, unlike me, the link above doesn't address embalming, wrapping, etc....just the stages of the body after death...and the biologist who is not addressing anything religious...shows even in the absence of the custom...His body/flesh still wouldn't suffer corruption in 3 days. Scriptures and biology agreed in this case.

I agree for the most part, BUT to say he had never done anything yet may not be correct, I don't see Christ sitting idle all that time, little is RECORDED, but even at 12 He told his parents He was "about His Father's business" and said they should have known that was what he'd be doing.

We aren't to be idle either, but to be about our Father's business, even thought you are right, it's not that we're earning anything, just part of being His children.

Sure.. wasn't one of his first acts making Drunk people even more Drunk? Making the BEST wine... zowie.. imagine that *openly* on a Ministers Resume? LOL.. would COGOP or any other group hire him? I think not.

I was speaking as it relates to his recorded ministry... The simple question is are you working for Your Salvation or living as a Son as Jesus did? You can't have it both as Paul clearly denounces this. Grace isn't a backup plan when your works fail. It's the FIRST plan.

We have to be established in Grace FIRST and then we will do our daddys work because he send his Son's spirit into our hearts.

Btw.. even take Lazareth's death.. into consideration. Jesus wasn't in a hurry, running, or pressured. Imagine those violent stormy seas... was he anxious? Nadda.. Dwell on that.

Those scriptures you posted from the NT would agree that his flesh saw no corruption, but was changed to incorruption and immortality.

Although I know what you meant, I just couldn't help to point that out.
