GM Chevy Volt

Postby MacUser » July 27th, 2010, 4:55 pm

GM Volt's price induces some sticker shock
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 34_pf.html

The long-anticipated Chevrolet Volt, General Motors' electric car, will cost $41,000, the company announced Tuesday, leaving consumers to decide whether its environmental appeal is worth a price far above that of similarly sized conventional autos.

... The Volt can travel 40 miles on its battery charge and an additional 340 miles on a gasoline-powered generator.

... "The Chevrolet Volt will be the best vehicle in its class . . . because it's in a class by itself," said Joel Ewanick, vice president of U.S. marketing for GM. "No other automaker offers an electrically driven vehicle that can be your everyday driver, to take you wherever, whenever."

Wow. 40 miles? at $41,000 dollars? Wow...

Replacement batteries will cost $13,000.00 and will be needed every 8 years. Can we say cash for clunkers 2?

The battery for the Nissan Leaf will cost about $20 more than the car cost originally, $33,000.00.

I'll see you in the line to buy one of these cars, NOT.

What they ought to do is just fuel them with hemp.  The non-cannabis kind, of course. Otherwise, Woody Harrelson would be like a dog on the side of the road chasing down cars.

I saw a video yesterday where a guy discovered that salt water will burn. He has used it to fuel small motors much in the same way as a steam engine. He was looking for a cure to cancer when he made this discovery.

I seen this also a few years back. In theory it looks wonderful.

The issue is the amount of raw power it takes to generate intense radio waves necessary to burn saltwater. Hear that machine humming? The salt water will only burn in this intense radio bathed state.

Note the Florescent light bulb lighting automatically also... noting the sheer power passing thru. It's the chicken and egg syndrome.. as we don't have free power to power the intense radio waves first.

Oil, Coal, Nuclear are currently the only options by any stretch.

And on this Volt Joke.. no 40 mile round trip car that needs gasoline to get back home is going to lower any carbon footprint. This thing runs on 240 volts and you're going to have to have your house rewired to even CHARGE it. Then just imagine what your electric bill is going to spiral $$$$.... not to mention the cost of recycling the batteries as they only cycle so many times. $$$$.

 Beam me up Scotty.

All houses in the US are all ready wire up for 240 volt single phase. That is each of the two hot lines that goes to the house to gether does 240 and each side to nutural is 120V.

Most batteries are charged on low amp draw and amp draw across the house meter is how electicity is measured. How long and how often will determine power use.

I would hate to have to buy the batteries, can buy a lot fuel with kind of money.
God Bless

I haven't seen a gas station yet with stalls where cars can plug in nor have I seen spots on the side of the highway or at office buildings. I work for an electrical contracting company and we would welcome such work but not a single call for a bid has been placed.

Either way it takes power to make electricity and carbon dioxide, not a toxin, is released into the air when electricity is made in may circumstances.

This is just another racket that society may fall for.

Thanks OT. I found this article to explain the Volt optional electrical connections.

1) The volt will come standard with a portable 120-volt charger that'll work with standard home outlets. Just plug it into the wall, connect it to the car and come back six to eight hours later for a complete charge.

2) For impatient owners, GM is also talking about offering an optional 240-volt home charge unit that'll need to be hardwired into your garage.. Expect the price of the unit and the installation to be wrapped into one bundle that'll be appealing priced and available straight from dealers. A coil cord will extend from that wall unit to the car and can complete a full charge in just three to four hours.

******

Also.. remember.. my laptop is suppose to get 8 hours life. It reality it gets 6 hours of life. Then it instantly died a while back DOA.. and I had to buy a brand new one.

Imagine.. the phone call..

Volt Owner: "My Car will not move after plugged in for 48 hours"

GM Garage: "We'll tow it in and install some new batteries.. they die like that all the time or you can just buy a complete new Volt. Either way is fine with us"

** Gulp.**

I am wondering what the amp draw is during a charge. Is it small like a cell phone charger, hardly, or will it need a dedicated 120 volt circuit much like aa microwave outlet.

wow and ford just announced:

The 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid brings together luxury and fuel efficiency. It’s where the most fuel-efficient luxury car in America*, with an EPA-estimated 41 city mpg*, integrates seamlessly with power, performance and craftsmanship. The MKZ Hybrid offers more standard luxury than anyone in its class. **

This premium 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid will come with the same base price as the conventional MKZ gas model, with an MSRP starting at $35,180.† This means upgrading to the hybrid’s eco-friendly emissions and fuel efficiency comes at no extra cost to you.

That is an awesome concept. Beautiful and FAST and I would love to have the exact same setup above. Solar Power...

BUT not mandated by the Federal Govt is my issue ( or offer $10,000+ rebates that it doesn't have ). Since Global Warming as portrayed by Al Gore doesn't exist other than what is naturally occurring or Earth, Mars, and other planets ( because it's the SUN DOH!! ).. let the free market decide if this is a great car or not, functional and worth the cash.

Others may not want such a limited range and be able to drive thousands of miles in one day. 100% Electric can't touch that... but when it can... it will then become viable alternative that again the market gets to decide.

Finally just understand energy is energy. It has to be produced either in your car engine or at a power plant and wired to your house.
