New iPad

Postby Pastor Bill » August 5th, 2010, 7:49 am

just got an iPad at work, now I need to know those important apps to have (especially free ones!)

Any suggestions?

Man.. I can't state them all...

GO to the App Store.. click on FREE and enjoy.

The ones with the [+] signs in front FREE are typically full giveaway applications and not just intros to buy to unlock etc.

Yeah I've been going through the free ones, I was meaning more are there any "don't miss this" apps that you really love and would recommend.

Flipboard

Postby Pastor Gary » August 6th, 2010, 10:00 am

Start with Flipboard. Just get it and try it. The interface makes you smile.

"For surely, O LORD, you bless the righteous;
you surround them with your favor as with a shield." (Psalm 5:12)

i tried fliboard, and didn't like it as much as pulse. pulse is more configurable and for my use a better "magazine".

dropbox is a must. this is for your PC:
https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTkwNjQ5NTY5

then the dropbox app on the ipad, so you can access it. It has built in PDF reader and office apps reader.

Then droptext is an notepad/text editor, that allows you to create, and edit text files in that drop box.

There are more robust editors, but none that I have found that allows access to dropbox.

olivetree.com has a bible reader, that is great, all resources are local. logos has a bible app that is my favorite (since I have logos, it allows me access to my library). http://www.logos.com/ipad

a 99center called Christian Rock is a nutsie app that give you the top 100 Christian rock/pop songs (wifi/cell-Internet streaming). they are randomized, and you can buy the songs directly if you want. they aren't sample songs, they are the full ones, but they are randomized like a radio station. one of my faves. there is a classical music one too called bingclassical, if you like that kind of music (I do, especially when studying).

Fox has an Iphone news reader, but if you get pulse you can sub to the fox RSS feeds. ABC news has an app, Associated Press has one too. I like weather bug for weather, but there is another by the weather channel that many like.

for browsing apps, one called appstream is pretty kewl. lets you see a moving list of the icons and lets you pick various apps by the icon and lets you select just free ones if you want.

ibooks is a must if you will be doing any reading. but for me, it is pretty hard to read for any length of time. burns my eyes, the kindle is MUCH better as an e-reader. (the amazon kindle app is also available for the ipad too. :) )

IMDb is the movies database interface app - pretty kewl if you want to look up actors, movies, etc... and finally, if you want a really kewl calculator app - you gotta get Math Sheet.

Apple CEO says new tablet computer doesn't support Flash because Adobe's Web graphics program is unstable and bug prone.

She plays no flash. Download an app for that.

there is no supported, non-hack method to workaround this. in fact it is a huge issue in many communities, and for many people THE reason not to buy the ipad. In fact, the one hack for "FRASH" that I have heard of was only for hacked iphones, and not even sure it would work on the ipad. so you aren't going to be able to go to the app store and get a flash replacement. Apple has officially and unabashedly announced and communicated that they will not and do not support flash.

Exactly.. to be clear on my above comments.. I mean that if you want a Facebook Farmtown Game... you can't play it in Flash via the browser.. you have to Go download an app for that ( or something close that Apple deems stable ).

Jobs called Flash lazy, ineffective, outdated software. Let me quote:

"unstable and bug-prone, the result of "lazy" development procedures, "

"They are lazy," said Jobs. "They have the potential to do interesting things but they refuse to do it,"

"Apple does not support Flash because it is so buggy,"

So if you want Flash... go buy a Dell. If you want a great user experience with limited to nil problems.. keep the iPad.

Well I work off an Apple IBook and I have Flash. Is this not a contradiction?

Why doesn't Steve jobs make a flash player then if he says there is so much that can be done but adobe is lazy?

See Steve's thoughts on flash.
http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/

It basically comes down to controlling content and making a smooth trouble free experience on the portables. Flash would be battery hog, buggy, open the portables up to crashes, unknown content via the flash delivery method.

They are and it's called HTML5.. sadly not flash.
http://www.apple.com/html5/

As a result.... a tsunami of large businesses / modern web designers have already left the Flash bandwagon.

About all she can do is pout! She is about to (or already has) found out how abundant Flash is on the net. Jobs can pontificate all he wants about flash but he just doesn't like it.

1 or 2 things will happen. This will cause so much uproar that jobs will say ok or Adobe will cave to jobs and somehow work out a compromise. But, that is probably at least a year away. Flash is moving ahead with some really cool stuff for desktop and mobile web browsers using other OSs. And it has some very powerful applications in the online mapping environment.

I really believe Steve Jobs has made a mistake this time, but I doubt it will cause him to ever admit it. And, he probably is going to do fine anyway.

Daryl..

The buzz.. I'm hearing from some online sources is that the revamped iPad will possibly be larger screened and feature the full mac osx ( instead of iOS ). This would solve the Flash issue and save face for Jobs ... if you are correct.

Be fun to see, eh?

Yes, we are watching.

For our area of work, plug-ins are still the only way to do nice mapping applications (e.g. flash, silverlight, etc.) . It is something of concern to us as we have to decide how to move, but when we are asked, we have to share the limitations of IPADs for flash/silverlight based mapping applications.

We shall see what happens... Something is gonna happen. And, I don't see html5 as the answer that many see it as.
