dolfan, until a couple days ago I would have wholeheartedly agreed with you. On some levels I still do. But I recently started watching a dvd called "
The Silencing of God: The Dismantling of America's Christian Heritage", not done yet but what I have seen is overwhelming evidence of the Founding Fathers faith in God, more specifically Christianity. Deists they were NOT.
George Washington's First Inaugural Address
"it would be peculiarly improper to omit....supplications to that Almighty Being who rules over the universe, who presides in the councils of nations, and whose providential aids can supply every human defect,.....that His benediction may consecrate to the liberties and happiness of the people of the United States.....
In tendering this homage to the Great Author of every public and private good,..... No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the Invisible Hand which conducts the affairs of men more than those of the United States..... Every step by which they have advanced to the character of an independent nation seems to have been distinguished by some token of providential agency;...........
since we ought to be no less persuaded that the propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself has ordained;
resorting once more to the benign Parent of the Human Race in humble supplication that, since He has been pleased to favor the American people with opportunities for deliberating in perfect tranquillity, and dispositions for deciding with unparalleled unanimity on a form of government for the security of their union and the advancement of their happiness, so His divine blessing may be equally conspicuous in the enlarged views, the temperate consultations, and the wise measures on which the success of this Government must depend."
John Adams' Inaugural Address
"I feel it to be my duty to add, if a veneration for the religion of a people who profess and call themselves Christians, and a fixed resolution to consider a decent respect for Christianity among the best recommendations for the public service....
And may that Being who is supreme over all, the Patron of Order, the Fountain of Justice, and the Protector in all ages of the world of virtuous liberty, continue His blessing upon this nation and its Government and give it all possible success and duration consistent with the ends of His providence."
Thomas Jefferson's Second Inaugural Address
I shall need, too, the favor of that Being in whose hands we are, who led our fathers, as Israel of old, from their native land and planted them in a country flowing with all the necessaries and comforts of life; who has covered our infancy with His providence and our riper years with His wisdom and power, and to whose goodness I ask you to join in supplications with me that He will so enlighten the minds of your servants, guide their councils, and prosper their measures that whatsoever they do shall result in your good, and shall secure to you the peace, friendship, and approbation of all nations."
That's just a couple of quotes from the Founders, there are TONS more in the other Presidents Inaugural Addresses and other writings that clearly shows there understanding that a foundation in Christian morals and principals directly impacted how God dealt with the nations of the world, in this case America.
I feel ya though on the idea that God is now no longer interested in the redemption or protection of our country. I just happen to believe that it is BECAUSE we have turned from Him as a nation. What would happen if we turned back, as a nation?
